Basilisk races
'... and leading ahead of the pack is Rosebelly! Look at her go! Hissing and shuffling forth like the mean, unrivaled sprinter she is. Is this the end of our reigning champion, Blueteeth's winning streak?'While the basilisks are generally very difficult creatures to tame, Mud dragons have proven to be especially dedicated towards the idea of taming as many animal species as possible and the obvious difficulty and possibly accidents didn't discourage them over the years - quite the contrary. Being a successful basilisk breeder became a mark of great prestige - and the purchase prices of their critters very profitable endeavor, especially basilisks trained for racing. Given the difficulty of the entire process, nearly all basilisks signed forth for racing have been raised in captivity since their hatching. The races themselves are organized ahead of time in larger Mud tribes or settlements, as most other draconic races are not so brave and/or foolish. Trained to receive a tasty reward when they pass a red-marked finish line, the contestants can either be placed in nature or in constructed environments that will not only challenge the toothy lizards running ability but some may involve a degree of swimming or climbing. The length of the tracks tends to be on the smaller scale though, as basilisks have poor eyesight and wouldn't be able to discern where to go if the finish line was situated too far away. While being a basilisk owner is generally only affordable for those with quite a big sum of Gems in their satchels, these events are organized in bigger tribes as a holiday, and most professions leave their stores closed so they can attend and watch. Fans of particular six-legged lizards can even bet on the victories of their favorite.
History
Originating from gladiatorial matches where wild Basilisks were caught and pitted against each other in fights to the death, the eventual banning of this cruel sport amongst most of the Mud dragon tribes was also presenting a new opportunity. The odd fascination that Mud dragons had for nature, and observation of critters smaller than them eventually lead the few individuals who tamed the fearsome Basilisks to experiment on what these fearsome, venomous creatures could potentially be used for.
Given the many incidents that lead to the banning of violent gladiatorial fights, breeders for the most part trained them for hunters as companions - but even this proved difficult - as basilisks were rarely willing to part with their prey. Eventually, recorded cases where basilisks were adopted as mere pets lead to two individuals who owned these pets to meet for a casual walk. This stroll was interrupted when both basilisks smelled the air and started quickly shuffling away. Their owners followed them and marveled at the speed that these otherwise docile creatures were able to maintain before they reached a half-eaten animal carcass.
No-one remembers the names of these original basilisks, nor their owners anymore, but the origin story of how the first basilisk racing competition started remains consistently accurate even amongst the many Mud dragon tribes living in The Continent. As such, most competitions feature the drawings of two basilisks as a logo for their racing events.
