The Philosophers

An organization of sellswords with high standards for those they chose to represent them. The Philosophers rely on the violence of Western Costrana, but rather than relish in it, they study it. They pride themselves on their strategic nature and their ability to outsmart their enemies. The organization is quick to ban those who do not follow their methods.

Structure

The Philosophers regard their leader with the utmost respect. Known as the True Sophist, they revere him above all people. Below him are his Zealots, devoted protectors of the True Sophist.   Most guild members strive to become one of the elite warriors of the Philosophers, the Spellbreakers, the Sentinels and the Stormbringers. They are well trained and deadly in combat. Often times, the guild will train one of each in a trio to create truly effective teams of mercenaries.   Spellbreaker:
Often trained in magic themselves, the Spellbreakers are the Philosopher's solution to casters. They are well prepared to counter the use of spells. Many Philosophers become Spellbreakers because of a personal hatred of casters.   Sentinel:
Sentinels are steadfast and unwavering in combat. Their ability to take hits without flinching strikes fear into their enemies. While their skill sets can vary, they are required to conceal their face to mask any pain felt in battle.   Stormbringer:
Stormbringers possess the ability to use the elements to their advantage. While mostly barbarians and sorcerers, the guild will train any who make their way up through the ranks to wield such power.   Below the elites are the Voltaires, followed by the Socrants and the Belligerents.

Culture

The Philosopher's are generally respected. Their personal beliefs don't drive them to possess greater power in the guild hierarchy, which usually works to their benefit. They are quick and effective and most stay out of their way.

History

The Philosophers originated in 1002, when the rising need for hired muscle drove a select few warriors to form the coalition. This proved beneficial to the Guild Union, who graciously accepted the younger guild into their ranks.   Over the years, the group became more refined in their methods, proving that brains is often more useful than brawn. They began training their men in strategy over brute force.   Today, their services are still heavily used, though more often by third parties than the primary guilds.
