Azak
Azak is a habitable savannah world, notable for being the homeworld of the Kel-Azaan and the capital of the Kel-Azaan Republic. The second planet of the Kel-Azak System, it has one natural satellite and a large contiguous landmass pockmarked with small-to-medium saltwater seas and freshwater oases. The climate ranges from desert at the equator to temperate at the poles, where it can rarely snow during winter. Due to the lower temperatures, the region within ten degrees of the equator is sparsely inhabited, and what settlements do exist are built entirely around large oases and seas. The northern and southern hemispheres oscillate between wet and dry seasons each year, due to an axial tilt in relation with Kel-Azak..
The population of the planet is fairly evenly distributed outside of the most arid regions, with concentrations in the polar regions and around water sources. Azak's population dropped sharply after the Kel-Azaan Republic's colonisation of other worlds, as Azaans sought out sparsely-populated offworld colonies over the increasing urbanisation of their homeworld. As such, the current population of Azak as of the mid-2300s CE is approximately six billion. Much of the economy of Azak revolves around starship construction and other forms of heavy manufacturing, while primary resources are predominantly imported from the large offworld colonies of the Republic.
The end of the 'new ways period' in the early 2100s CE resulted in the formation and codification of the dozens of warrior clans that dominate Kel-Azaan politics today. These clans own large tracts of territory on Azak, and in some aspects are comparable to the various Human nations of Earth. Many clans enforce their own laws within their territories, a semi-legal practice tolerated by the national government. Due to the political power of the clans on Azak, there is no formal capital city. The Strategos and War Council rotate between several of the largest clans each year, with pre-built government infrastructure to support a smooth transition. Clans compete against each other for the most prestigious government offices in order to win the favour of the War Council.
Azak hosts the most gladiatorial arenas of any planet in the galaxy, as well as the most duelists. Hundreds of thousands of gladiatorial beasts are imported from across the galaxy each year to Azak, some illegally. Azak's gladiatorial combat is broadcasted across both Republic space and the galaxy as a whole, and is some of the most popular entertainment content in many star nations. The Azak Global Fighting Complex (AGFC) hosts the largest gladiatorial arena in the galaxy: the Triumphal Battlefield of the Republic, which has a typical spectator capacity of 700,000, and an overflow maximum of more than one million. The AGFC is also home to the Ring of Blades, which is a smaller arena that hosts individual duels.
