Federal Government of Earth

The Federal Government of Earth (also called EarthGov) is the planetary governing body of Earth. In some ways a successor to the United Nations, it directly governs the nations of Earth, cities on Luna, and several orbital stations throughout the Sol System, while devolved administrations govern Mars and the Sol Habitat Complex. It is responsible for the construction of planetary and orbital infrastructure, provision of healthcare and education, social housing projects, and the distribution of Basic Income resources.

EarthGov was established in 2228 CE, shortly after the establishment of the first wave of interstellar colonies. The United Nations of Earth was no longer responsible for just one planet, but several, as well as an ever increasing number of star systems. As such, the UN clarified its role as the top-level government for all colonies, rather than solely Earth. The Federal Government of Earth was created to take the place of the UNE in directly administering Earth and the Sol System due to this.

EarthGov later faced challenges after the construction of the Sol Habitat Complex in the late 23rd century CE. The complex was initially considered an extension of the extant spaceborne structures in the system, but as the complex's population surpassed that of small colonies, its inhabitants began to demand independent governance. A compromise was eventually reached, that became the basis of all multi-colony system governments: EarthGov would retain overall control of the system and its resources, while the Sol Habitat Complex would receive a devolved administration to directly govern itself. This system was later expanded to Mars after its colonisation in the early 24th century CE.
