Xani

Xanis are a species of sapient bipedal arthropoids that originated on the arid world of Xanth. The history of the Xanis is intertwined with that of the Vheln, a client species that the Xanis created through centuries of selective breeding and genetic manipulation. Due to the physical prowess of the Vheln, Xanid genetic selection favoured intellectuals and those capable of navigating the social intrigue of their more complex society. This has resulted in modern Xanis having developed comparatively faster cognitive processing and concentration abilities than other species. In addition, Xanis are capable of quickly adapting to new tasks, understanding the basics in a short period of time, even if full comprehension takes as long as comparable species.

Xanis live for approximately twenty years longer than most species, with the average lifespan of a non-genetically modified Xani coming in at approximately 110 years (with medical care). However, their biology is heavily adapted to the specific biosphere of Xanth - while they are resistant or immune to most of the diseases on their homeworld, their immune systems respond poorly to novel illnesses. Part of the Xanid biology that makes them live for longer also reduces the effectiveness of medication such as vaccines, so significantly stronger doses are required for any Xanis travelling outside of Xanth.
