Maldova

The Maldova family is one of the wealthiest families in Eckril, if not the whole First Island. The family began with humble origins owning only a single fishing vessel. During a time of war, they turned to smuggling, slowly expanding their number of boats and learning the ideal routes across various Southern islands around Eckril. When the war ended they turned their smuggling operation into a legitimate trade business. With their keen sense of trade and expertise to make deals that paid out, the Maldova family turned their small business into the Nassos Trading Company. Due to their wealth and power, the Maldovas are key players within the ruling class of Eckril.

Structure

The head of the family, and by proxy the head of the Nassos Trading Company, is decided by the previous head. Currently, there is a struggle for leadership between Nox Maldova and Cartia Maldova for head of the family as their father died before choosing an heir.

Culture

The Maldova family are Runekeepers. This is a familial trait that is only allowed to exist in a direct line of succession. When an heir is chosen, the head of the family seals the power away from all unchosen competitors. Only if the heir dies or is otherwise deemed no longer worthy of succession is that power unsealed in the others. This power is what allowed them to grow their trading empire rapidly. The Maldova family keeps the knowledge that they are Runekeepers very close to the chest, only revealing it for strategic purposes.

Runekeepers have the ability to use sigils, runes, and curse marks in order to control other entities. There are many uses for this ability. Historically, governments have used Runekeepers to create lasting treaties between nations. However, Runekeepers are also known as those that can seal or summon extra-planar beings, curse others, and will sometimes act as pact-brokers.
