Aurelius

Aurelius is the title given to the king of the elves inhabiting the Aeloria Bay it's a word that has been derived from the Dercian language and were adopted around the time the elves became a part of the Empire of Dercia.   The word is derived from the ancient Dercian word Aurelis, meaning "golden" or "shining." it was originally used by the people of Pearlhal as a title given to had served the city faithfully, but over the years the word fell out of use and was replaced with other titles.   The elves of Aeloria Bay adopted the title from the Dercians when during a diplomatic meeting between the Dercian diplomate and the leader of the Aelorians, the Dercians asked how they should address the leader and the leader asked the Dercians typically called men of his position, the Diplomate who was an avid reader of ancient history, remembered the old title of Aurelius and from then on the leader of the Aelorians became known as Aurelius.   For many years the newly acquired title was a heated debate among the Aelorians, many saw it as an intrusion from the Dericans on the life and culture of the Aelorians and that it violated the neutral state they had maintained for generations between them and their neighbours. Others were more open to the use of the title and saw it as some guarantee from the rapidly growing Empire of the Dericans.   The elves of Aeloria Bay were allowed to maintain their way of life and their king was allowed to stay in power, even when the territory officially fell under the control of the Dercians some 200 years after first contact.  Biggest change was that the king now had to be approved by the monarch in Pearlhal but since there have never been a time when the monarch have disapproved, its mainly seen as a formality at this point.

I love that basically the title came about because of some history nerd, haha. Love it. I like the fact it was controversial for a bit too.
