Different Forms of Magic.

A basic guide

The source of magic

Magic comes from the soul, each individually blessed by Merthicz. Half of the use for a soul is to provide magical prowess, whilst the other is to give life to the body it's inhabiting. No animated person or thing can move or process anything without one, and both animals and all various forms of plant life have a soul. It's what allows the magically inept to brew potions and tea.   When a person dies, the God of death Uvie will come to collect their soul so he can judge them, to determine if they should go to Heaven or Hell. Though it's rather rare, sometimes a soul can try escaping purgatory and back to Mirthae if they're unwilling to move on. If the soul isn't caught by Uvie, they'll attempt to find a body to inhabit, sometimes their own dead bodies if need be. But most of the time, they end up taking a fetus' body.   When they inhabit a body yet to be given a soul (usually are given at eight weeks of development), they can easily carry on from their old life in terms of their memory and personality before death, though they do have to learn to walk and talk and whatnot all over again. In the rarest of cases they can inhabit a body that already has a soul, leaving each one with varying control over the new body. Sometimes all that comes is memories of the past life. Sometimes the person who attempted the hijacking can only speak to the other in their head, but other times they can take full control over the body at random. When the new body receives the wayward soul, it also gets the magical prowess from the person if they have any; adding on to the abilities of the soul already meant for the body if such a case happens.

Outlets used to perform magic

Almost anything can be used to cast magic with enough creativity, but there’s a few main ones.   Wands/staff: mostly used for spells, but can be used to activate runes and enchantments.   Gems: The most common item used for magic. Not only can they help conduct magic, but it can also store specific toes of magic depending on the gem.   Talisman: Used primarily for enchantments, but can also be used for spells   Drinks: Used really only for potions and tea, though it’s been thought that it can be used for some of the other forms of magic.   Food: Commonly used for enchantments, though it’s not uncommon for people to eat the left over tea leaves.

Different forms of magic

Enchantments/curses:

Enchantments are a form of magic that manipulates already existing objects and living creatures. This can involve either combining things, taking things apart, prolonging the effect of an already casted spell, or delaying when that spell is casted.   Another name for this type of magic is called a curse, though it's typically used for when it's preformed with malicious intent. It tends to be considered a subjective word when getting into the nitty gritty of the topic, and more of a legal term than anything else. Magic of this kind is usually acquired from a talisman

Potions and tea:

Potions are the best form of magic for anyone at any level of magic use to learn. Because plants don't lose its soul just from dying, it gives anyone a chance to make potions. Read Potions and Tea to learn more about this magic.

Runes:

Runes are drawn symbols normally accompanied by an incantation. Runes can be used for the same purposes as an enchantment, but is more effective on objects.

Spells:

Spells are used to affect the emotional/mental state of a being. To use this type of magic the spell user needs a wand or staff to conduct the magic with. Theoretically, it can be used on plants to encourage a more bountiful harvest.

Incantations:

While incantations are a spoken form of magic that’s used for similar purposes like runes and enchantments, it’s mostly used to boost the power of magic, most commonly paired with spells.
