History

Chewintin is an ancient village, one of many Jarinese villages first settled around 1200BT. Eventually, these villages formed into petty kingdoms, which were ultimately lost when the Lythian Barbarian hordes swarmed through the Kard river valley after the battle of Sorrows in 683BT.

More recently, it has been held by Clan Asperan since 650, after being abandoned for 50 years following a bloody raid by the Kath Barbarians in 601.

Another major barbarian attack occurred in 706 when around 75 Pagaelin crossed the Osel river at night and started butchering the sleeping villagers. A dozen innocents were murdered, and Lord Tolon Asperan and his eldest son were killed, saving a number of children who were being dragged away, likely to a life of slavery.

During this time, the old Miller, Magorim Tormin, demonstrated arcane ability driving another band of savages away. Also, the woodcarver Eribaon Glocron proved his worth killing over a dozen barbarians with his longbow. Both men are held in high regard by locals and Sir Varndin.

Sir Varndin Asperan took over the estate management after being a ward of the Constable of Jendes, and it has since prospered. Still, he has not forgotten or forgiven the Pagaelin.

Sir Varndin has improved the settlement's defenses considerably, establishing watchtowers, and in 718, he completed the construction of a moat around his manor. He has also promoted able fighters from among the peasants to Yeoman status and has forged alliances with the Miners Guild for mutual security.

Military

Chewintin supports;

The Lord Sir Varndin and 2 other Knights.

2 squires.

3 Yeoman at Keldkith, 5 at Chewintin.

5 men of arms stationed at Keldkith, 5 men of arms at Chewintin.

Town militia mustering around 40 unarmored footmen and roughly reasonable quality 25 archers.

Sir Varndin holds training drills twice per month and a small mock fighting tournament/festival once a year before harvest. He identifies likely candidates for promotion to Yeoman staus.

Religion

The Manor has a small chapel dedicated to Larani (Order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow) and Chaplain Karina Asperan, the lords younger sister, administers to the household.

Chewintin has a small Chapel for the worship of Peoni (the Irreproachable Order) attended by Brother Micura, with a shrine dedicated to the lives lost during the Pagaelin raid of 706TR. Most of the commoners are worshipers.

The Tanner and Hide worker Isuua Vertalin is a devoted follower of Ilvir and has constructed a snake-like shrine near his workshop. He leads a small number of like-minded Ilvir worships. Although Sir Vardin, a devoted Laranian and disapproves of such practices, he has not made any effort to put an end to them. Occasionally wandering clerics or worshipers of Ilvir visit and use this shrine.

Duty paramount, then all will be well, motto of Clan Asperan
