Session 077 - Return of the Ravens

General Summary

7^th and 8^th of Morgat (Winter) 721TR

The story so far

In the City of Cherafir, in the foreign quarter known as the Alienage, Athena killed one of the men responsible for the murder of her family, Ralgin Hamlin. Ralgin was a leading member of a mission tasked with recruiting mercenaries from the Lythian Continent for the war efforts of the King of Rethem. Athena is fighting on the other side of that war.

Meanwhile, an ancient enemy of Quazzy has learned of her presence in the City and is ready to strike.

The continuation of Session 76 - Massacre at the Alienage.

Part 1 - Investigating the Mercenaries

The Heroes hide the bodies of the leadership of the recruiting mission on the roof of a nearby Brothel, then escape the Alienage. They spend some time evaluating the documents and the loot they have recovered from the warehouse raid. They have copies of the mercenaries' contracts and learn.

The mercenaries number around 250 warriors divided among three leading Companies, plus a loose collection of around 50 independents warriors or small bands.

• The White Tigers, a Company of 90 warriors from the Karejian City-States based out of their Warship, the White Tiger. Captain Athved leads them.
• The Iron Legion is a collection of 60 former members of the Azeryani Legions led by Captain Eanfrith, based out of the Warship King Kurnis's Lion.
• Breva's Raiders is a rough collection of 50 Ivinian Vikings led by Captain Breva.

The party has recovered funds that were intended to feed this army for another month. They note that the mercenaries have not been paid over winter. The Army intends to leave port for the Kingdom of Rethem in early Spring, once the erratic seasonal winter weather subsides.

Part 2 - Avian Ambush

Raven Woman, from festivalclaca

The next day the Heroes, while returning to their Inn, are ambushed. Quazzy's old Nemesis, the The Raven Woman, who sends her a mental message accusing her of rudeness, "being so close and not visiting".

A magical gateway opens and Swarms of Ravens attack Quazzy and her friends. They are followed by large Smoke Ravens made from vapor, which enveloped the heroes, sapped their strength, will, and spell-casting abilities. Last to emerge was a Gigantic Undead Bird which caused sickness to anything around it. All the heroes are pushed to their limits and only narrowly survive the assault.

Quazzy notes that many Ravens were intently observing the battle. She believes that the Raven Woman was seeing through their eyes.

Part 3 - Reviewing Resources and Planning

The next day the Heroes sell any gems and miscellaneous items they have collected over the last few months of traveling. With these resources and some assistance from her friends, Athena pays the majority of the high prices to get her ancestral Greatsword Retribution recast and enchanted at the Forge of Eternity. The Master Weaponcrafter Yebisi Netoshi loans Athena a Greatsword until Retribution is ready.

Athena now plots her next move. She will attempt to convince the mercenaries to take her side in the ongoing war Rethemi Civil.
