Hall of the Mountain Kings!
The Hall of the Mountain Kings! is an ironically named flophouse for anyone who is too inebriated to carry themselves home. Technically speaking, no one is a permanent resident, though some drunks might as well call it home.
It is a well-built, sturdy, nondescript structure from the outside, and it's one crowning quality is that it holds in sounds very, very well. Its few windows are perpetually covered by heavy dark curtains, keeping the interior lit only by torch and candle, giving it the feeling of an everlasting night. It is a particularly favorite place for ribald and irreverent entertainers, especially gnomes and halflings, whose raw sense of humor might provoke stuffy middle and upper classes into retaliation. The space is big enough to have three or four troupes performing simultaneously with minimal interference.
No one owns the Hall as that would require some kind of maintenance or responsibility. Unlike the taverns and tubs in the entertainment district, individuals purchase barrels of brew that are then dumped in enormous open-air vats for revelers to dunk in their own flagons. Dirt, grease, hair, bugs, and everything else finds its way into the vats but the alcohol content of the beer is high enough that its drinkers don't mind. The floors are slippery in some parts, sticky in others, and only occasionally rinsed out when the smell becomes unbearable. Many in the residential area mutter that it's a breeding ground for disease, but its loyal visitors wouldn't change a thing.
