The Dueling Club
The Dueling club is a peristyle in the south central area of Reverie built on a grassy knoll. The two tiered platform is glazed white brick inlaid with dull red tile and surrounded by limestone columns with marble capitals. The columns hold up a Terracotta roof with a handsome balustrade above a ring of carvings of an ancient war. Inside the columns is about 245cm X 735cm of open floor space, enough for two duelist to move freely.
It’s “club” label is tongue in cheek, any resident of Reverie is welcome at any time, there are no walls or doors or governing bodies. In the early hours, young elves come in uniform for ininstruction, wearing matching stockings and vests that show their rank. A single buttoned half vest that stops mid-rib for the neophytes, and a double breasted vest with long tails for most high students. All of them subject to canes slapping their legs, correcting their footwork and lifting their chins when it’s their turn, while their peers watch from the grass outside.
During the sun hours the opponents come as they are with weapons that are tools, beautiful and practical. The peristyle is a ballroom is a battlefield is the edge to the mouth of a volcano. Each thrust is meant to crunch bone or pierce flesh until it is not. Each parry is a desperate bid to save life and limb. They stalk one another in circles before the first strike, or the stretch side-by-side together. Always, afterwards, the victor offers his hand to the elf on the floor.
In the evening the peristyle is a stage with duelists arching their backs in beautiful curves, taking their eyes off one another to run up columns and flip in the air, their costumes trailing behind them. A delighted crowd sitting on the grass claps along their gasps for the spectacles.
