Mr Terry worked as a substitute for a few weeks in the AP Science class Cody was taking. As a lark he wrote out an arcane equation on the board and labeled it as extra credit.  A few days later Cody turned in a paper that solved the equation. It also cast the spell firebolt and almost caught another student on fire. That night Terry told The Duke about the incident. The Duke realized the boy’s potential and insisted that Terry begin to train him.
