The Fjords

The Fjords are a dangerous wasteland in the northwestern part of Mon Cadeau. They used to be a lush, green area, with trees and fresh water. They were home to Helgasker, one of the largest villages. It was a wealthy city, second only to Karlsfell, home to another college, one not for fighters, but for academics. It had an extensive library and was the arts and cultural center of Mon Cadeau, home to artists, musicians, writers, etc. But twenty years ago, in 1470, Mount Raseri, a dormant volcano, erupted and decimated the entire area. It destroyed all of the plant and animal life and left no human survivors. Two centuries of culture and history were erased. Now the area is uninhabitable, an ashy, desolate desert. Many people believe that it is haunted with the ghosts of those who died during the volcano's eruption. Now, The Fjords are used as a place of exile, where people are sent to die. When people are tried by the Karlsfelli court, they dread two sentences: death and exile to The Fjords, as the two are understood to be synonymous. No one who has been exiled to The Fjords has ever returned; thus, its true nature is a mystery to the remaining inhabitants of Mon Cadeau. However, unbeknownst to the world, one person did survive the disaster. As a result, his motivation is simple: survival. He trusts no one and often engages in criminal activity for money and protection. He is not unkind, but he is self-serving. And he has an extraordinary ability, one not known to anyone else in the country--the ability to transform into a wolf. His name is Asher the Bard, and he is a Theriomage. Perhaps one day, others will know his story. But for now, he lives a lonely life, a relic of the past.
