Session 01: Unlikely Heirs Report in Moontide Isles | World Anvil

Session 01: Unlikely Heirs

General Summary

Wendell Cuthbert Wallace was an old explorer from the main land that had settled in the Moontide Isles. He had found the land exotic and wild, despite it being simply commonplace and mundane to many of the local inhabitants. Throughout his travels, he crossed paths with numerous indigenous people--hiring them as guides, finding them as curiosities, or simply marveling at their 'backwards' cultures and beliefs.   When Wallace passed, six such people who had crossed his paths in relatively minor ways received notice that they were named in Wendell Wallace's will and that they were to report to the "League of Explorers and Adventurers" located on the island of Baeddan in the Moontides, just north of the town of Eastbridge, in order to receive their inheritance.   Levi Obadiah Kilgore, a Northlander barbarian, was named for making an impression upon Wallace while hiring him to help track down a great bear on the island of Llywelyn near Levi's home, although the expedition had ultimately proved to be unsuccessful.   Ilbryen Dorydark, a half-elf Cleric of Emone, was encountered in their church's libraries while researching a rare boar species that was located near their village, though their encounter ended when Ilbryen insisted that the local guides that Wallace had hired were to be paid a fair wage.   Illevaere Solandra, a wood elf druid, had acted as a guide for Wallace's expedition when they were lost in their forest, showing the expedition some of the secret ancient pathways through the forest--an act which was rewarded by Wallace publishing maps of the pathways, resulting in the human villagers nearby using the pathways for their own trade and travel.   Rieta, a tiefling sorcerer, had encountered Wallace in the city where she was scraping by a meager living. Wallace, however, was excited at her ability to use magic without the study of books--a process that he believed was tedious and slowed down true exploration.   Tiarjead Faefyire, a dragonborn ranger, had acted as a guide for one of Wallace's expeditions through the mountains of her homeland, but made the largest impression upon Wallace for her race's inability to grow beards, as most explorers would have a rugged beard that made them look shifty and untrustworthy.   Kaal, a half-orc barbarian, had met Wallace during one of his explorations where he had initially thought that Kaal would attack the expedition, but to his surprise, did not. It was unclear exactly how much more of an impression Kaal had made upon Wallace as his letter made the assumption that the half-orc could not read.   As the group arrived, none knew one another, and were met by Reginald "Reggie" Mossstride, a young halfling who acted as the elder Wallace's manservant and the groundskeeper of the League proper. The group was informed that they had inherited the League of Explorers and Adventurers (formerly the Gentleman's League of Explorers and Adventurers)--the very building that they were in. Reginald informed the group that the League's members had grown older and had, for the most part, stopped actually exploring and adventuring some time ago and instead used the property as a place to gather and tell stories. Most of the League members had passed on, leaving Wallace who had grown ill as the sole remaining member. To see that the League continued, he willed it to the group of six individuals, all of whom were uncertain of the inheritance and why Wallace would have chosen them to carry on the legacy of the League.   The inheritance's value took a worsening turn when Erastus Beard, the tax collector for the local Duke Hueck Greyhall of Eastbrige arrived to greet the new owners of the League and informed them that the League was 2000 gold in debt from unpaid taxes. Beard told the inheritors that they would need to pay for be imprisoned, but originally offered that if the group could pay 10% of the debt in one week, he would take it as a sign of good faith. Rieta was able to bargain him down to accepting 5%.   Reggie told the group that the League had very little money left, as most of its last assets were spent on stocking the League with kegs of brandy, and erecting a marble statue of Wendall Wallace in the front of the League.   As the group was looking to see what they could sell of the League headquarters, Bertram Breeze, owner of the Nymphgate Trading Coster, arrived. He had heard that there were new owners of the League and approached to see if they could be hired to help. He said that the trade run that goes from Eastvale to Wrathford, crossing through the Scarlet Hills, has been running into issues. Caravans have not been making the trip through and his teamsters have grown nervous and demand guard. He has offered the group 50 gold to see that his caravan makes it from Eastbridge to Wrathford, and another 50 gold if he can see that the return caravan makes it back safely. He has offered an additional 200 gold if the source of the disruptions can be ended.   Having little choice and needing to earn money, the party agreed to the terms. Breeze went back to Eastvale and the caravan will pass by the League the next day, where the party will join them for their trip through the Scarlet Hills. However, it is a three day trip from Eastbridge to Wrathford and a three day return trip, cutting the party's time to pay their debt to the tax collector very close.
