Balthazar's Legion

"Steel among the alabaster,"
  • Balthazar's Legion Motto
  •   Balthazar's Legion refers to the Mercenary groups that branched off from Lord Ashlein Ron Balthazar's troops.    Since their founding in 120 FE, Balthazar's Legionnaires are a well recognized group. Their reputation, though varied on their likability, has always been one of strict order and dedication to their job. If one pays a Legionnaire for a task, they will perform the task faithfully.   Joining the Balthazar's Legion gains one the following:
  • Weekly Stipend 6 GP per week, plus any additional money one makes for their job, which is often substantial.
  • The use of the Balthazar's Legionnaire Crest, gifting the user +1 bonuses to intimidation checks when intimidating a non-soldier or non-mercenary. +2 to persuasion checks to any soldier, mercenary, or official.
  • Can request the use of any additional Legionaries when performing a job, instead of paying the fee. To do this one must parlay the commanding officer.
  • +2 Immediate Bonus to Honor Score (max 10).
  • To Join Balthazar's Legion, one needs the following:
  • A soldier, noble, or folk hero background help one's chances of joining severely. An acolyte background with the Dawn Warrior or Mother Sun. Criminal, charlatain, or cultist background lowers one's chances severely.
  • A Honor score of 3 or higher.
  • The ability to wield or use martial and simple weapons, as well as at least medium armor and shields.
  • Must have the recommendation of a local lord or religious figure for bravery and devotion. This must be presented to a local Balthazar Legion official, who will approve or disapprove based on the below merits.
  • Must pass a rigorous week-long fitness/mental exam held at Lord Ashlein Ron Balthazar's estate. Travel to said estate is paid for.
  • Structure

Strict hierarchy. Lord Balthazar created the group, but the governance of said group is handled purely by a Field Marshal. The Field Marshal governs the troops within a region, ensuring the passage of information and jobs to each local troops. The troops in each region can then make a judgement calll as to who wishes to perform a job set forth. The higher one's standing within the Legion, the more clout they have when deciding.   The ranks are as follows:
    • Steel Legionnaire - One who has served and fought among the legionnaires. A true paragon of the guild.
    • Iron Legionnaire - One who has shown, time and time again, their devotion and has garnered a hefty dose of respect.
    • Bronze Legionnaire - A new recruit, or a low performing legionnaire. One who has only just begun their journey into the legionnaire life.

    Culture

While the Legionaires are considered a strong group with rigorous discipline, they are not soldiers. As such they are free to make their decisions as the group sees fit. Many legionaires who work with one another consider each other true companions. The members tend to be of the "work hard play hard" and even outside the group consider themselves always up for a challenge.   Many members of Balthazar's Legionaires are also believers in the Dawn Warrior.

    Public Agenda

Serve the needs of the people who hire them to work. Always look for jobs that will help the populace. Do one's duty with skill and honor.

    Assets

Funded by Lord Ashlein Ron Balthazar, who holds one of the larger deposits of gems and gold in the Southern part of Alloyus. Unofficial truces with members of the Dawn Warrior denominations.

    History

After Alloyus had been colonized and the Bastion Accords were signed, Lord Frederick Ron Rosetta entrusted Lord Ashlein Ron Balthazar with the creation of a military group reminiscent of the 20 Orders. These knights and soldiers would promote order and provide security throughout the colony's lands.   Unfortunately for Lord Balthazar and Rosetta, maintaining a standing army required a great deal of funds they did not have. And with most Imperial funds moving toward Bastion and the North, the army they formed had to make due. So Lord Balthazar retrofitted them into a mercenary guild, and paid considerably out of pocket to outfit and train the people that would become Balthazar's Legion. He then gave the autonomy to those leaders to utilize his crest of arms, and encouraged them to promote their services throughout.   In the present day they are often paid by officials, politicians, and land owners to act as supplementary members of the townsguard. Often during their time in a town they will train the local townsguard.
