Skulls of Seance

"Beyond this world, beyond our mortal understanding, exist beings of pure magic. These beings are not native to this world, and thus their ways are not our own. To call one into this world requires powerful magic that is at once dangerous to the fabric of reality as it is life threatening to the caster. But with this... this we can bend the rules a little..."
  • Unknown regarding his own Skull of Seance
  • A Skull of Seance is a powerful item that can be crafted and destroyed. Built from the skull of an extraplanar being, it allows the user to commune with a being of great power from another realm. Often used by those who speak with Fiends, Skulls of Seance have a reputation of being magic items of ill repute. In spite of this, the beings communed with are varied as there are skulls, and not all Skulls of Seance are of evil nature.   Until the object is invoked, the Skull of Seance simply looks like a polished, crystalline skull. The exact details of what it is or who it belongs to is unknown to everyone seeing it, when in truth it is simply reflecting a likeness of that person's skull back to them. Because of this everyone views the skull as slightly different, but under intense scrutiny (DC 18 Medicine Check, or DC 20 Investigation Check) can recognize it mimicking their own skull and (DC 20 Arcana Check) can notice it is mimicking other's skulls too.    Skulls come in three sizes: Small, Moderate, and Large. Their size is usually indicative of the power of the being summoned by the spell. However there are exceptions.   Currently Ela Stonetell has one, purloined from Kelios Kostas' desk. After a tense night the party deemed it safe for use and have allowed Ela to keep watch over it.

    Mechanics & Inner Workings

The caster cuts their hand and places it upon the skull. The skull then pulls out 5d12 HP from the user and summons the being to whole this skull belongs to. The creature then will speak to the user for 1d2 hours.   The one who activates this skull is immediately attuned to this object. The attuned gains advantage on all saving throws against magic, and can speak/understand the language’s understood by the creature who belongs to it.   horfoeuohoejiuehgoioeiuheurghonvljehgoushfhogsuihfdvjcovuizefhovizufhvgosvilzufhvsufhvizulhvfilzfvjlshkahbfkgrsvbhfsbdvahifuvbkeuhbfvuhkrbyubnivjnaoqbnvjlskznvljbhsjhdjihfudyfudoijovjnsjdbckzjnkjhiduhvinozdvohdvbiudvinjxcz - This language unintelligible, as if the magic surrounding it is obscured.

    Significance

If it is in the possession of someone it is likely a mage who regularly communes with an extra planar being. Such people are either very powerful or very careful, as the being is not tethered to a magic circle that is normally made to bind such beings. In addition its use usually comes at a cost to its user.   If it is found in the hands of a non-mage they either do not know its use or are holding it for someone else. However it is the job of Dusk Mage and Father Moon officials to commandeer such objects, and as tend to be confiscated for security reasons.
