Concoctions

Concoctions are Magic substances that are created through the combinations of various items with magical properties. What make them special is that most concoctions can be made and used without the need for additional magic. For this reason, concoctions are used in order to allow magic beings to perform magical feat that are outside their realm of magic. For an example a concoction can be made to allow a fire magi to breathe underwater. Concoctions are also used in order to allow a magi to perform more powerful or complex magic. For an example a concoction can allow a beginner fire mage produce greater flame.
However, these properties of concoction also commonly get them confused with enchanted objects. So it is important to note their 2 major differences. The first difference is that concoctions don’t require magic to make or use. Instead concoctions derive their magic properties from their ingredients, conditions and processes which determine the complexity and power of a concoctions. However, this magical derivation from ingredient also makes it so that concoctions are in general weaker that their enchantment counterparts. Thus, concoctions sacrifice power for diversity.
The second big difference between concoctions and enchantments is that concoctions have a finite usability. For concoctions this amount it can be used and how long it last will depend on the type of concoction is and its purpose. Some concoction can only be used once, some gradually weaken, some last days, some wear off in seconds. It greatly varies, but in the end the effect from all concoctions do come to an end. Meanwhile in enchantments, the effects will continually work as long as the magic source and link are still intact. Over all concoction are used in order to help diversify ones abilities beyond those they were naturally capable of.

Concoctions Classification

As mentioned earlier concoctions have various forms. There are 3 major classifications: Diffusions, potions, and alloys. They are mostly based on the physical state of the concoction and how it is administered. Each has certain strength and weakness that best fit their intended needs.

Diffusions

Diffusions are concoctions of the gaseous state. Usually in the form of vapors and mists. However, dust like concoctions that are easily blown in the wind or form into cloud are also classified as diffusions. Diffusions are usually intended to be inhaled by the intended target. There are the fastest acting type of concoction and depending on the concoction can also be invisible or undetectable. They also can expand to fill a room and thus have a large effecting range. However, in being in the fastest acting concoction they also wear off the fastest. Many diffusion concoction diffusions start to weaken as soon as the target is no longer inhaling the diffusion. Also, most diffusions begin going into effect as soon as they are made. Thus, they can only be saved for later use if stored in an airtight vessel. They are also highly subject to air movement. Thus, they are not as effective in large or outdoor space at small quantities. Also due to their expanding properties it is more difficult to direct diffusions to a specific target. The slight exception is dust diffusion that can be inhaled by a directed target, and last slightly longer.

Potions

Potions are concoctions of the liquid state. They can be clear, metallic, color, thick and thin, but they fill to the form of their vessel. These concoctions are meant to either be ingested or poured over a surface. Ingested potions usually give a magical trait or effect to a target. Meanwhile poured potions effect just the surface of a being or a material. They are very useful for concoction that need to be directed on a specific target. Also, they can be easily stored in vessels to be sorted and used for later. However, potions effectively only have a one-time use. Also, the strength of a potion is directly proportional the amount of potion made. Thus, the quantity of potions administered has to be calculated to give the desired effect. For an example with a couple drops of Sleepers Spirit relaxes the target, while a full bottle will invoke a deep sleep that a target may take weeks to wake from.

Alloys

Alloys are concoctions of the solid state. Thus, they retain their own shape Common forms includes metals, minerals, wood, textiles. Alloys can be formed into various form or can even be combined into other physical designs such as sculptures, jewelry or clothing. This makes alloys easy to store and use over time. Their physical form also means alloys are capable to have their magic “refilled” or to serve as effective vessels for enchantments. However, their physical form as serves as a weakness as once an alloy is broken the magical properties either severely weaken or disappear altogether. Of the basic concoction classification Alloys are the slowest type. Most require the target to be in direct contact. A few alloys can radiate to an area of influence, but the target is still need to be close. Also, most alloys require prolonged contact to have a strong effect. However, this slow dispersal of magic also means that Alloy are the longest lasting of the concoction types.

Ingredients

Concoctions ingredients themselves may or may not have magic properties on their own. However, they have natural connections to certain magics due to their origin or location. Many ingredients can be dervied from animal, plant and fungal anatomy. Some minerals, crystals and ores also have magic properties. Ingredients can be source from magical location or objects in the presence of certain magical events or conditions. Some igredients can even be derived from the gods such Deadtear and lifethread. Since concoctions get their magic from the magic substances they are composed of, it is important to understand and know a variety of ingredients and their properties
