Prancing Peryton

The best known tavern in Hem's Holler is the Prancing Peryton, which serves as many a local’s nightly meeting spot. Quiet and somber, full of trappers, trackers, loggers and other woodsmen who merely want to unwind without having to worry about constant brawls or trouble. The tavern is so named for the stuffed and mounted Peryton’s head above the bar – a souvenir brought in years ago as repayment for a standing debt.
The peryton is said to have the head, neck, forelegs and antlers of a stag, combined with the plumage, wings and hindquarters of a large bird, although some species vary. A peryton casts the shadow of a man until it kills one during its lifetime, at which time it starts to cast its own shadow.
