History
For much of written history, Mundus Minor has been ruled by mankind. The dwarfs never strayed far from their mountain holds and mining towns in the hills, and the elves never made more than a temporary foothold on the continent. This all changed when the prospering human realms sent ships south in search of new lands to settle and riches to extract. In the forests and hills east of the Sea of Sorrows, mankind found the Gruakhai. Strong and resistant to the cold, they were considered the ideal workforce by the humans who thus far had been unable to settle and exploit the frigid forests north of the river Kinzal. Between the 14th and 15th centuries, thousands of gruakhai labourers were brought over to harvest lumber for the human realms, most of them clad in chains. The gruakhai found their chance for freedom autumn of 1478. A series of slave revolts swelled into a massive uprising now known as the War of the Axe and Shackle. What remained of the independent human realms banded together to form the Chikukema League. Old grievances and territorial disputes were forgotten in the interest of mutual survival, and in the summer of 1484, the War of the Axe and Shackle came to an end. The Gruakhai had conquered most of the lands north of the Shrouded Peaks, and were now content to make peace with the League, too small to be a threat to their freedom and too well fortified to justify waging extended war on. In the years since, the Chikukema League has been subject to a significant amount of infighting. Left without possibility of outward expansion, the lords of the League have turned on each other in an effort to grow their own influence. Rarely do these escalate into armed conflict, but they are a constant strain on the stability of the realm.Members
