Sadie Sampson

Sadie Sampson is a kind woman, dependable, if a bit of a lay about. If you drop into the Wagon Shop unannounced, half the time you can find her shirking her work to read the daily newspapers from the city at her desk, or out back playing dice and card with the youngings around town. She's good friends with Celia Hooker, who has put it into her head that she can be whatever she wants to be. It turns out Sadie is less interested in keeping the Wagon Shop running effectively and more interested in moving to Buffalo, or Rochester, or Albany to be a reporter.   She also enjoys a reputation for being the last stop on the Underground Railroad before the war. That buys her quite a bit of good will and patience in these parts, even if it means she's slow with the account book or letting folks know when the job is done. She only has two young men helping her out, so it's something of a miracle Sadie always gets the job done finished when push comes to shove. I've been trying to figure out how she gets it all done, to be honest.   Sadie has been around Munson for a good while now, and Amos Church comes to talk to her about what she calls "the old knowledge" from when the world was still young.
