Kingdom Under the Mountain

The Kingdom Under the Mountain is the official title of the Dwarven Kingdom in Erebor.  It had flourished once in the early days of the third age from 1999-2210.  Then it had been largely abandoned as the greater expanse and wealth of the Grey Mountains had called the Dwarves North.  The rise of the Dragons lead to the Dwarves moving back South and re-establishing the Kingdom in 2590.  This was the golden age of the settlement, and ended only because Smaug, The Magnificent came and took the mountain from the Dwarves.     For nearly 200 years the DWARVES OF THE LONELY MOUNTAIN wandered the land.  Some found themselves moving to the Southeast and founding the KINGDOM OF THE IRON HILLS.  A large band though could not accept the loss of their halls and wandered around waiting for a chance to reclaim it.  This group was at first lead by THRAIN II the son of THROR who had died under the mountain.  Thrain II disappeared sometime around 2884.  It was later learned that he wound up in the dungeon of the Necromancer of Dol Gulder where he was found by Gandalf, the Grey.  He provided Gandalf with a map and key to provide to his son Thorin Oakenshield.  Gandalf found Thorin and with the map and key he was able to retake the Lonely Mountain.  In the subsequent The Battle of Five Armies he was mortally wounded.  His cousin Dain, of the Iron Hills had come with an army to aid their kin, and he became King Under the Mountain after Thorin's death.  Dain still rules this Kingdom and his original holding in the Iron Hills.

Structure

This is a typical Dwarven Kingdom.  More bee hive than human settlement.  Highly organized yet individually performed and driven as each Dwarf has their task and sticks to it.

Culture

Basically dwarven, but modified by the hard life in the North with the Dragon wars as a shaping factor.  And even more so the recent diaspora caused by the loss of access to Erebor.

Never again
