Titanomachy (/ˌtaɪtəˈnɒməki/ Greek: Τιτανομαχία Titanomakhia, "Titan battle")
When earth was still young, the Titan Kronos rebelled against his father and with his victory he became king of Titans. Before his death though Uranus spoke a prophecy:
As you slew me, you will be slain by your own child. He will cast you from your throne and rule in your place as I did before you.Kronos was followed by this prophecy for his whole life. He ruled the Titans with fear and bore no mistakes. The fear of his children overthrowing him ruled him though and so every child his wife Rhea bore he ate. At some point Rhea grew tired of this and hit her pregnancy from her terrifying and angry husband. She bore Zeus and hid him in a cave to be fostered by the goddess Almathea.
The Conflict
Prelude
Zeus learned of his fathers deeds and how he ate all of his siblings, so when he was grown he posed as a cupbearer for Kronos. As soon as he had his trust he gave him a mixture meant to make Kronos throw up his five siblings.
Deployment
Together with his five siblings Zeus released the Hekantonkheires and the Cyclopses, who fought at their sides. The first by throwing stones with their hundreds of arms. On Zeus´side also were the Titaness Themis and her sone Prometheus.
The Titans stood on the other side led by Kronos himself and Atlas .
The battle almost seemed won, when the Titans drew up one last ace: The monster Typhon was summoned from the depths of the Tartarus. He stormed Mount Olympus and the gods had to flee. Only Athena stood her ground, doing everything she could to slow the monsters progression and grant her siblings time to flee to Egypt, but even Athena had to admit defeat and the monster barreled on to its fight with Zeus. The monster tore the leader of the Olympians limb from limb, playing directly into his plan. Zeus grew back his arms and legs with the help of the other gods. The gods and Typhon were locked in a battle that lasted years and lay waste to many parts of the world until Zeus managed to focus his energy and cast one lightning bolt strong enough to defeat the monster.
Battlefield
The Olympians were on Mount Olympus while the Titans fought from Mount Othrys.
Aftermath
The Olympians split the rule and the powers amongst them according to their own nature and abilities. Zeus ruled over all the Olympians, and his domain was the sky. Poseidon got to rule over all of the waters on earth and Hades was given the rule of the Underworld and the domain of the dead.
The Titans were imprisoned in the Tartarus and are now guarded by the Hekantokheires. So the duty to make sure the Titans stay imprisoned now lies on Hades´shoulders.
