Kaza'ir

Borders Rastenholm to the south, the Sylvad to the north, the Dragon's Teeth to the west, and the Sea of Shallows to the east.

Geography

Kaza'ir is a harsh place, dominated almost entirely by the Anapat Desert. In places a flat, cracked, red earth desert and in others a shifting sand-dune desert, no part of the Anapat Desert is particularly hospitable. Central Kaza'ir is broken up only by the Forbidden Oasis and the Shifting Sands, neither of which are exactly tourist destinations. Southern Kaza'ir is dotted with the foothills of the Southern Curtain, the mountain range separating Kaza'ir from Rastenholm. Southwestern Kaza'ir is a lush river delta, and northern Kaza'ir is dominated by towering plateaus.

Social strata

Kaza'ir society is rigidly organized into four social strata, and while social mobility is theoretically possible, it requires both an enormous amount of money and a huge amount of social clout to accomplish, making it practically impossible.   Magisters are wealthy wizard-nobles who rule over Kaza'iri ziggurat-cities. They are also the only individuals by Kaza'iri law allowed to own property. Magisters are expected, from a young age, to rigorously study magic. Any young member of this social class who shows no affinity or talent for magic is cast out of the family - sometimes directly into that family's slave bevy. Magisters make up about half a percent of the population.   Citizens are the free people of Kaza'ir who still live in the ziggurat-cities. Unable to own property, most citizens rent their dwellings from a Magister. Most citizens are tradesmen, but scholars, clerics, entertainers, and farmers also fall into this category. To be a citizen in Kaza'ir, you simply have to be neither a Magister nor a slave. Citizens make up about 70% of the population.   Slaves are Kaza'iri people who are property of Magisters. Whether through debt, punishment for a crime, or simply being born a slave, anyone in Kaza'ir can theoretically become a slave, though most are lucky enough not to gain a Magister's ire in such a way as to become one. Slaves generally do the bulk of manual labor in the ziggurat-cities, and make up about 20% of the population.   Dusters are those Kaza'iri citizens (or, sometimes, escaped slaves) who shun the ziggurat-cities and choose instead to live a rough life on the desert floor. The Anapat Desert is a harsh place to try and survive, but it is dotted with duster towns. Dusters are generally always in a state of conflict with their Sahradar neighbors, and are generally inured to the dangers of the desert. Dusters make up about 10% of the population.   Sahradar neither actually a social class nor actually part of Kaza'iri society, the desert elves nevertheless deserve mention, as you would be hard pressed to travel the Anapat Desert without seeing at least one. The Sahradar are semi- or permanently nomadic and generally follow the paths of desert creatures, water, or both.

Demography and Population

Estimated population 8 million   Estimated 55% human, 23% elven or half-elven, 6% dwarven, 5% gnomish, 4% tiefling, 2% dragonborn, 5% all others

Technological Level

Relatively advanced. Most Kaza'iri technology is based on magic, and the Magisters keep the ziggurat-cities flying. However, dusters and Sahradar operate on a much more rudimentary level on the desert floor, though Kaza'iri technology and hoarded Antivassan relics regularly find their way to the desert floor.

Religion

There is no official religion of Kaza'ir, and very little is frowned upon in the pursuit of power.

Foreign Relations

Kaza'ir is currently a trade partner of Antivassos, Eirenwyn, and the Dragontooth dwarves.
