Katarine Heights

<Kat-ar-rine>

"I sure showed them. They all said I'd die climbing those mountains, but here I am, and I'm still kicking. Hah!"
— Mari Katarine, recovering in Strossenberg from the loss of her leg during the expedition.

Geography

This dense mountain range cuts through the center of the continent, marking the divide between The Ash and the Southern Corridor, with tall snowcapped mountains, twisting mountain passes, and plunging ravines. The terrain varies wildly, and paths through the mountain are invariably circuitous.   Abandoned watch outposts and hastily constructed walls block otherwise easy paths and tunnels - relics of battles with undead, and a measure of safety to prevent them from moving freely. Some date back over a hundred years.

Fauna & Flora

The Katarine Heights have a thriving wild animal population thanks to its rough terrain that makes hunting nearly impossible. Throughout the mountains are twisting caverns that house exotic and strange life sheltered from outside interference.     The Katarine Ram is well known in the region for its tendency to headbutt any humanoid creature it sees off of cliffs, a trait the species picked up over a hundred years of defending themselves from the undead that wander through the mountains.   Though undead population in the mountains has been mostly cleared out, a slow trickle still enters from The Ash. The cold peaks of the mountains preserve these undead quite well, and some of these ghouls date back to the Sokolan Cataclsym, while others are Strossenberg lookouts that found themselves particularly unlucky.

Natural Resources

The mountain range houses scattered caverns and tunnel systems, and no small number of old Stross mines. Metals and precious gems are plentiful throughout the mountains, and many mines were not fully exhausted when they were abandoned following the Sokolan Cataclysm.
