Lei Prayer Box

A prayer box in Lei culture is a small shrine to Wytris. Usually these prayer boxes are kept indoors as a small tabletop shrine, but some outdoor varieties exist. Their use is commonplace in Lenif even among visitors, and nearly unheard of anywhere else.   Small pieces of parchment are burnt or offered in the prayer boxes in order to deliver prayers to Wytris and her servants.

Execution

The most common prayer boxes are decorative boxes made up of a strong wooden frame enclosed by decorated paper or thin panes of wood. The panels are painted or carved such that when a candle is placed inside, a replication of the moon and night sky is created.   At night time a candle is lit inside the prayer box, and prayers are written on small pieces of parchment. Each prayer is individually slipped into the box to be burned by the candle. The smoke rises to the sky allowing the prayer to reach Wytris. Windy nights are often seen as a bad omen for this reason.   In Etsa, the Legario Belltower rings at night before the city's lanterns dim. Hundreds of homes can be seen lit only by the night sky and twinkling of prayer boxes.

Outdoor Prayer Boxes

Outdoor prayer boxes can sometimes be found in the more heavily forested and rural areas of Lenif, from a time when practitioners of old druidic magic were more common. They are usually made of carved stone and more durable materials, weathered by the elements. Most still have an area for candles to be placed, or a fire built, but prayers are no longer burnt in them.   Instead, prayers are written and torn into small ribbons before being placed in a large basin atop the box. Wild birds will often search these basins for material to build nests out of, and it is a good omen to see a prayer ribbon in a birds nest. Thus, the prayers are watched over by Wytris's servants, and closer to her domain in the sky. Such nests are not to be disturbed.
