The Lancers

The Lancers are an international guild of adventurers and mercenaries active primarily in Central and Northern Aisoa. Originally founded in 3862 EC by a group of adventurers, they have had multiple generations of members by this point.   Despite their name, the members of the guild are extremely diverse and use a variety of weapons.   The Lancers Grand Lodge is located in Northern Usmina, and has a rocky relationship with the Usminan government due to their refusal to get involved in the war with the Calashi goblins. Numerous members have left their ranks as a result.

Structure

The Lancers are loosely structured - there is a single leader of the guild as a whole, but otherwise there are few rigidly defined leadership structures. Older and retired members often run local lodges that act as a place to request aid, post jobs, and occasionally mentor new members. There is no formal training, no recruiting other than recommendations and referrals by members

Public Agenda

The Lancers take a wide variety of jobs, from monster hunting, bodyguard and protection work, as well as exploration and other odd-jobs. The guild strictly bars its members from doing what they consider political jobs, to maintain their role as international adventurers-for-hire.   While most Lancers work for pay, the guild posts both paid and unpaid requests, and encourages members to do both as the founders would have.   The guild has a written code, as well as numerous other processes laid down by one of the early members, Udara Leoren. Among them is the Lancers Code.

Lancers Code

"For the people"   Lancers are expected to stay out of political squabbles, assassinations, and formal wars. To do so would undermine the Lancers ability to help the people of any nation from the dangers of the world.   This rule is the most controversial of the Lancers Code, and many Lancers have left after being unable to help in a conflict to defend their birth nation.   "What is said is done"   Once a contract is accepted, a Lancer must see it through - and for the agreed upon price. No further haggling when it is difficult, or when the job is complete.   The common-folk that call on the Lancers for aid cannot be expected to understand the dangers they face - it is up to the Lancer to do their due diligence and understand what they are getting into.   Folk that abuse this rule and keep information from the Lancer or trick them into breaking the code can become excommunicated from the guild - no Lancer will help them.   "Humility in fame"   The guild takes a cut from all rewards a Lancer receives.   This fee is most frequently used to be able to offer a reward for other jobs that cannot afford to pay. When a fishing village filled with people barely keeping afloat needs help, they are still able to request it. The guild adds their own reward to what the client can afford. For more wealthy clients, the guild might not add anything.   The rule is said to be a reminder that though an individual might rise in fame, skill, and take on harder jobs - someone still needs to do the simple work.   Local codes   Each lodge tends to have its own local rules and customs on how jobs tend to be given out. In many, there are no 'dibs' on completing a task - simply, whoever completes it first is given the reward.

History

The Lancers were founded by three adventurers - Ladore Aegarmane and Doran Bladewalker, humans from Usmina, and Yu Kyung-ja, a satyr from Xeblisau.   Ladore, a minor noble from the Aegarmane family, funded the trios initial adventures which quickly gained them fame in the area. When demand for their help grew bigger than they could manage, they reached out to others they had met. Among them was Udara Leoren, who penned the original Lancers Code.   The guild was met with admiration and found great success adventuring across the region. Unfortunately, Ladore and Yu were killed fighting the Sisters of Fire, a cult that they had been combating for many years. Doran survived and returned with Yu's body, but Ladore's was never recovered.   Doran retired soon after, leaving leadership of the guild to a younger generation of adventurers.
