The Trocair (Trow-kair)

The Trocair are a trio of three goddesses associated with mercy, forgiveness, and justice. They were originally agents of the god of battle, Suriel, but were banished when they aided the escape of  the elder fire elemental Gual, who was condemned to die.   Since their banishment, they have become the patron gods of the repentant condemned and those seeking forgiveness for their sins. Each of the three have sway over a different sub domain. Cagair, who hears the prayers of those seeking a new life. Stiurahd, who guides the repentant on their path to betterment. Suardal, who executes those who falter and stray from their redemption.   The Trocair do not offer any kind of promise of an afterlife, and seem to be content simply to exist to improve their charges. Because of this, many followers of the Trocair find themselves worshipping other gods as well.

Tenets of Faith

The divine goals of The Trocair are to offer a second chance to those who are deserving of it and guide them to a better life. To this end, their devout worshippers seek out those who are condemned to death for their actions, and bargain for their release. Some go as far as forcibly freeing those they believe Cagair has chosen for redemption.     Not all who follow the Trocair's ways were sentenced to death, but regardless of their original crime or sentence they are treated the same.   Once a new member begins their path to redemption, they are permanently marked in a visible place. The manner varies by region, but facial tattoos, body scarring, and branding are all common. The mark is said to both be one of shame, such that the crimes they committed are never forgotten, and a promise to follow the guidance of Stiurahd and their mentors.

The Path of Redemption

Redemption in the eyes of the Trocair is not easy, but it is not done alone. The adherent who once vouched for a new member's freedom acts as their mentor for as long as it is needed. Many methods are used when guiding a pupil, both positive and negative, but one of the most important is that a mentor must share in the struggle of their pupil. Whenever a member falters, their mentor must suffer the same punishment that they or anyone else doles out.   Though redemption never truly ends, most orders have a ceremony when a member gains their own pupil. An alteration is made to their mark to reflect this.

Failure

If a member is ever deemed unwilling to work towards redemption, they are condemned to die - even those whose crimes did not originally warrant such a sentence. Whenever possible, the execution is carried out by their mentor, and is seen as a great mark of shame.

Holidays

The Trocair have no formal holidays, but it is customary to give thanks to the goddesses on the anniversary of the day you were originally condemned to die. Many spend the day performing as many good deeds as they possibly can.

Social

Contacts & Relations

The Trocair are seen as traitors by Suriel, and foolish for believing the tricks of evil creatures. To the followers of Suriel, it is far better to slay evil than to give it a chance and risk harming the innocent once more. Though there are no open hostilities, the followers of each camp rarely get along well together.   The elder fire elemental Gual, counts the Trocair among his allies, and owes immense gratitude for aiding his escape from Suriel's executioners. To this day, Gual is hunted by Suriel and her forces.
