The Wicked Hammers
The Wicked Hammers were an elite military unit of Strossenberg active from 2892 EC to 3829 EC. Their membership was exclusively limited to one hundred members, representing the most skilled warriors and tacticians in the nation's standing army. Despite their name, members of the Wicked Hammers used a variety of weaponry and armor, leading to a versatile fighting force and numerous unusual skillsets.
At their peak, it was one of the greatest honors a blacksmith could receive to have their weapons or armor used by a member of the company, and the Wicked Hammers enjoyed high quality equipment and support from their allies.
Though the company was primarily dwarves, the company included several non-dwarven Strossenberg natives as well.
Composition
Structure
Members of the Wicked Hammers elected their leader in a loose democracy that functioned much like the rule of Strossenberg itself - squad members deferred to the wisest or longest serving members who voted on a formal leader.
Members retired from the Wicked Hammers if they felt there were no longer up to its high standard, which was viewed by other members as an act of great wisdom and humility. Members were added as fitting candidates were found, and the company dipped below their one hundred count limit several times in their history.
Training
The Wicked Hammers did not formally train their members, and most were already near the peak of their skill prior to joining the Wicked Hammers. It was an unspoken rule that either the Hammers reached out to you, or you had a single chance to contact them and impress them with your skills.
During peace time, the Hammers split their time between defending the city of Strossenberg, sparring among themselves, or solving local problems - bandits, monsters, and the like.
History
The Wicked Hammers were loosely formed during a three month long siege on Strossenberg. When the invaders were finally repelled, the heroes of the siege found their ranks largely depleted, and their armies were combined and reorganized. A hundred of those soldiers formed the Wicked Hammers.
The company enjoyed a long and illustrious career with numerous high profile members that cycled in and out of the company over time.
During the end of the 1st Sokol Crusade, the expedition was ambushed and surrounded during the Laukon Massacre. The Wicked Hammers stayed to cover the retreat of civilians, settlers, and healers, and was largely wiped out.
