Undead
Undead are entities created from the bodies of previously living creatures using necromantic magic. There are two main types of undead; mindless, and intelligent.
When a creature dies, their soul naturally travels to the Void. Intelligent undead are those whose souls have been bound to a corpse using necromancy. This magic prevents their soul from passing on to the afterlife, or being claimed by other forces, and lets them continue to exert their will over their body.
Undead created in this way can vary heavily based on the particular spells used to animate them. Some magics corrupt and influence the souls they bind, darkening them, turning them bloodthirsty. The most advanced retain most or all of the soul's personality and memories.
When a soul is not available, mindless undead can be created. These creatures act much like animated objects or other automaton, following orders from their masters with little to no regard for their own safety. Well made mindless undead can have complex sets of instructions that allow them to "think" intelligently, but none of them have free will beyond this.
Corpses that have already been used to create mindless undead are generally difficult to reanimate - the arcane shortcuts that burn through their bodies upon creation can make it difficult or impossible to repurpose.
