Essensologists are scientists and arcanists who make particular study of Essence, both how it works and what can be done with it.
While numerous developments have been made as a result of their work, Essensologists are concerned more with exactly how essence functions as opposed to what could be done with it in the future. The recipe for essence was found mainly through experimentation and good fortune; the fact that how the substance actually works isn't really understood is unnerving for some - these are the people who usually end up in essensology.

Most work from universities, and are funded by them to conduct research. Some work for technology companies such as F.A.T, and are paid to create new technologies. Some are just rich old mages looking for something to do.
