Atmoran Line of Kings

The Atmora Line of Kings was a royal line established in the early years of Atmora. The line has been broken once and now consists of two families; the ancient Karstens and the current rulers, the Warmaw family. The King of Atmora has dwelled in Aramoor, ruling from the throne in The Crown.   By ancient customs, the throne should always pass to the eldest son of the current king. The Karstens observed this rule with impunity. More recently, the Warmaw family has broken this custom multiple times, giving way to two separate Queens within the royal line.

History

The Early Kings

Kraglin Karsten
Kraglin Karsten, also known as Kraglin the First or "The Scion," was the first king of Atmora and was inaugurated in AoR 50 on the steps of The Crown in Aramoor. Kraglin hailed from an influential family that had been instrumental in the early rebuilding of Aramoor after the receding of The Mists. Kraglin was the only king of Atmora to be chosen by his people, with every following monarch inheriting the throne.   Kraglin was merely 26 years of age when chosen for the crown, as the people of Atmora looked for a king that would serve for the long term, with the expectation that he'd bring stability to the region. Though young, Kraglin became renowned for his elder-like maturity. Often surrounded by advisors many years above his age, Kraglin wisely heeded advice when needed yet remained decisive enough to make his own decisions.   In AoR 101, war with the renewed Quaan Cult would commence, though the enemy had expanded across The Red Wastes, becoming The Quaan Empire. The beginning of the war would signal the near end of Kraglin's reign, as the older man had no heart for battle. Kraglin would pass peacefully in AoR 107, passing the throne to his son, Ragnor Karsten.
Ragnor Karsten
Ragnor Karsten would inherit the throne after the peaceful death of his father, Kraglin. Immediately, his mind turned to the developing war with The Quaan Empire. Ragnor would rally the people of Atmora against the enemy, creating massive armies to march south against the oncoming hordes. Ragnor would lead his own company into battle, becoming known as one of Atmora's finest warriors. His men would often refer to him as "Torm's Fist" due to his ferocity in the face of the enemy.   Most of Ragnor's rule was devoted to the war, leaving the menial tasks of running a kingdom to his council of advisors. Ragnor would fall on the battlefield in AoR 127, leaving the throne to his estranged eldest child, Armin Karsten. Ragnor would be remembered as one of Atmora's greatest heroes. The Bleeding King would embed himself alongside his father in the annals of history.
Armin Karsten
Armin Karsten, the eldest son of Ragnor, rose to the throne in AoR 127 after his father's death on the battlefield. Growing up in a time of constant combat, Armin spent precious little time with his father and did not take well to his caretakers. He would be known as "The Fatherless," clearly missing a father's guiding hand, becoming merely a shadow of man compared to the exploits of Ragnor.   Armin's rule was wrought with disaster, as he held no knowledge of warfare and often disregarded the advice of his generals. For the first time in the war, Atmora would lose ground, the Quaan pushing past the country's southern border. By the end of his rule, Armin would be known as The Coward King.   Armin would be found dead in AoR 236, his body discovered in a wine cellar beneath The Crown. Many believed Armin to be the victim of Atmora's first regicide, though this was never confirmed in any official sense.

The First Golden Age

Kraglin II Karsten
Kraglin II Karsten, also known as Kraglin the Second, "The Beloved," and "The Eternal," rose to the throne in AoR 136. Kraglin II, born in AoR 111, was seen as a harbinger of good fortune for the current line of kings, which had suffered under the rule of Armin. Many believe his birth to be a sign of intervention from Torm. Kraglin II would prove this omen true, living for 111 years and reigning for a golden age of 86 years.   Kraglin II inherited the throne at the age of 25 and immediately took direct control of military decisions, looking to undo the damage his father had wrought upon the south of the country. He was successful in driving the Quaan back, doing so within the first five years of his reign. This earned Kraglin II the people's favour, and he would grow into Atmora's most inspiring leader since his grandfather's rule.   Regardless of the war, Atmora flourished economically under Kraglin II, rising to new heights that would not be seen again for another 100 years. King Kraglin II would pass peacefully in AoR 222, inciting a time of great mourning across Atmora. This golden age would come to a swift end as the throne passed to his eldest son of 63 years, Kraglin III.

The Kinslaying

Kraglin III Karsten
King Kraglin III Karsten was known as an impatient and angry man and would rule Atmora for less than a full year. In AoR 223, Kraglin III was murdered by his brother, Tors Karsten. Both brothers had been impatient for power, their father having lived into his 111th year.   Kraglin III would become little more than a footnote to history, known as the "The Slain" and the victim of Atmora's first official regicide.
Tors Karsten
Tors Karsten would rise to the throne in AoR 223, murdering his brother to do so. Before the deed had been discovered, Tors had secured the necessary support, allowing him to avoid punishment and declare himself innocent of wrongdoing. The people of Atmora, still in a period of mounting for Kraglin II, had no choice, nor the will, to oppose this.   Tors would become paranoid and distrustful during his rule. The people of his courts would refer to him as "The Metal King," for he never appeared before others without donning plate armour, as he remained paranoid of a plot against his life. Though his temperament was ill and mood foul, Tors' rule was uneventful for most of his 28-year reign.

End of the Karsten Line

Emile Karsten
Emile Karsten rose to power in AoR 251 to massive pressure from the Atmoran people. With Tors' passing, Atmora looked to his son to make amends for his father's crimes. Atmora had begun a steady decline since the end of Kraglin II's rule 30 years prior.   Emile would primarily rely on his religious teachings, often heeding the words of Nall-Ur when making decisions rather than the advice from his council or courts. This strategy would prove ineffective in ruling Atmora, and within the year, Emile would abdicate the throne, fleeing to Nall-Ur in the north, relinquishing his life as a king to become a priest of Torm.   This action would break the Karsten line, Emile having no sons of which to pass the throne. Rather than naming one of his many relatives, Emile would name his friend, Vernax Warmaw of Aramoor, the new king of Atmora. Emile would be forever known as "The Deserter King."
Vernax Warmaw
Vernax belonged to the wealthy Warmaw family and had secured supporters before the decision to make him king in AoR 252. Many in the public believed this to be a purchase of the throne and a direct insult to the Karsten line and the Atmoran people. Nevertheless, King Vernax would be inaugurated on the steps of The Crown, just as Kraglin Karsten had been 200 years earlier.   Vernax was known to be distrustful and vain. His ego led to him using the position as king as a crowning achievement to his business successes rather than a seat to improve the lives of Atmorans. However, his reign would be relatively short, and his son would rise to the throne in AoR 273.
Vernax II Warmaw
King Vernax II is often referred to as the first of the true Warmaw kings, as the title was passed to him via the cultural tradition of the old Atmoran kings. Though many still held ire for his father's actions, Vernax II would do much to alleviate these concerns and would be remembered fondly by the end of his 21-year reign.   However, his most notable and controversial move would come during his final hours, as Vernax II named his daughter, Karo Warmaw, as his true heir, bypassing his eldest son Jonas to do so. Vernax II died in AoR 294, giving way to Atmora's first queen.

A Stolen Throne

Karo Warmaw
Karo Warmaw would become Atmora's first queen in the early months of AoR 294, which shook many of Aramoor's noble houses to their core. Karo's early years in command were met with disdain from many in her court, though she would do much to see them silenced. Karo ruled with a strong hand, decisive in decisions of state and military stratagem. By her 10th year as queen, Karo had silenced most of her critics.   Karo would fall ill in AoR 306, amid her 12th year as queen. Aramoor's clerics gave a grim diagnosis and fear that the Warmaw line would be broken mounted in Aramoor. Without any sons, a repeat of Emile Karsten's actions seemed plausible. To alleviate these concerns, Karo would name her brother Jonas, king in her stead.   By AoR 308, Karo had made an unlikely recovery, healthy enough to resume duties as queen once more. However, King Jonas would not surrender the crown, and Karo would never be queen again. Karo would become known as "The Usurped." In AoR 310, Karo gave birth to a son named Felix. This child would go on to become one of Atmora's finest kings.
Jonas Warmaw
Jonas rose to the throne in AoR 306, named by his sister, Karo, to secure the royal family line. The kingdom braced for Karo's death, though she made a miraculous recovery several years later. However, Jonas would not surrender his gifted crown and denied his sister as queen. The decision was met with ire among Aramoor's people, for Karo had been weel-like during her time as queen. Nevertheless, Jonas's court would support him during this time, regardless of public backlash.   Known as "The Thief King" and "The Stubborn," Jonas nonetheless remained a decent ruler. By the end of his reign, Jonas would name his sister's son, his nephew, Felix as the true heir. This was seen as an attempt to reconcile his actions from years earlier. However, all could see that Felix Warmaw had been groomed as a ruler by his mother and was far more deserving of the crown than Jonas's own sons.

A Second Golden Age

Felix Warmaw
King Felix Warmaw, known as "The Golden" and "The Groomed King," would rise to the throne in AoR 338 after the death of his uncle, Jonas Warmaw. Felix would become one of Atmora's finest rulers, if not the finest itself. Felix grew up under the close guidance of Karo, who herself had been queen for 12 years before Jonas. After her throne was stolen, Karo guided Felix in the ways of statecraft and education and, at a very young age, had turned Felix into an ideal candidate for a throne, had she one to give.   As king, Felix oversaw a glorious reign of 58 years. War with the Quaan Empire had been quieted over the past few decades, giving way to another explosion of economic growth in Atmora. Felix would guide Atmora during this time of prosperity, a second golden age that would see Atmora become the most powerful nation on Naneth once again.   By his late reign, he would mostly be referred known as "Good King Felix." Felix would begin to decline health-wise in his 80th year and looked to name a successor. For the second time in Atmora's history, a king's sons would be bypassed for the throne, as Felix named his granddaughter, Ellenor Warmaw, as his heir. This decision was not with nearly the amount of animosity that had risen when Karo had been named, likely due to the enormous amount of respect for Felix. Felix would pass in AoR 396, giving way to Atmora's second queen.
Ellenor Warmaw
Queen Ellenor Warmaw would rise to power soon after the death of "Good King Felix", one of Atmora's finest kings. Ellenor, renowned for her beauty and kindness across Aramoor, would not disappoint the people, and continued the golden age started by her grandfather.   By the end of Ellenor's rule, concern grew that the Warmaw family name would fail, as by Atmoran customs, her sons shared the surname of their father, the King Consort, Russel Hatcher. To avoid the Warmaw name falling by the wayside, Ellenor would abolish this rule. Yet again, a Warmaw ruler would dodge around Atmoran customs, and once again, this move would be met with grumbling and complaints from the population. Regardless, by AoR 451, King Robin Warmaw would rise to the throne, the first son of Ellenor.

Decline of the Throne

Robin Warmaw
Rising to the throne in AoR 451, Robin Warmaw would quickly see to the end of Atmora's latest golden age, one started by his great grandfather, Felix. Robin was seen as lazy and uncaring by most of his council and rumours of his ill fit to the throne quickly spread throughout the kingdom. He would become known as "The Bird King", as he could often be found bird-watching in the gardens whilst his council scrambled for answers on whatever new threat faced Atmora.   The war with the Quaan Empire would renew during Robin's rule, a prospect that Atmora's king was woefully unprepared for. Atmora would lose much ground in these early years of renewed strength from their enemies. Those living in south Atmora would come to know a time of great fear and suffering, much of their work being halted by frequent raids. Without resources from the Venerath Plains, Atmora's economy would begin to fail with large portions of Atmora falling into famine.   King Robin would pass in AoR 454, only four years after his reign began. His death was seen as suspicious, but so unloved was Robin as a king, that none felt the need to investigate, nor did any mourn.
Felix II Warmaw
Felix II would inherit the throne in AoR 454 after the suspicious death of his father. Felix II, inspired to undo the mistakes of his father, redoubled the war-efforts against the Quaan. Felix II would introduce conscription to Atmora, a move not seen since the earlier Karsten Kings. Many of Atmora's youth and older male population found themselves serving in the Atmoran army, regardless of training or proper outfit, so desperate was the situation.   Felix II would soon become known as "The Widow-Maker" and the "Warmonger", so high was his thirst for battle and bloodshed. This period in Atmora's history would be one of the bloodiest, with none living being untouched by the trials of war. Atmora's economy is pushed to the absolute brink, as the majority of able-bodied workers serve on the frontlines.   Though costly, Felix II's affinity for warfare would prove successful, and by the end of his reign in AoR 516, The Quaan Empire had been pushed well back into their own borders. Atmora would successfully hold their southern border against the enemy, though at a great cost to wealth and life.
Vernax III Warmaw
By AoR 516, Felix II's son, Vernax III, would rise to Aramoor's throne. Vernaxx II would inherit the throne at perhaps it's most vulnerable. War with the Quaan continued into Vernax's reign and Atmora's economy remained in shambles due to the actions of Felix II. Aramoor was hit hardest of all regions, with the majority of the city falling into a cycle of famine and crime.   Even those that dwelled within the walls of The Crown were affected. The Warmaw family would fall into ruin, many of it's business ventures drying up and their debts coming due. The Warmaw had remained extremely active in Atmora's industries, a fact that would now hinder them at times such as these.   Many items in The Crown were sold off, countless valuables and heirlooms of past ages, all to settle the debts of the Warmaw family. Vernax III would become known as "The Beggar King" and "The King in Cloth" by the end of his reign in AoR 541.

Modern Kings

Kaspar Warmaw
Kaspar inherited the throne from his father, Vernax III in AoR 541, after a brutal period of time for not just the royal finally, but all of Atmora. Growing up during this time had pushed Kaspar towards becoming extremely religious, in the hopes that Torm would provide during this time of strife. Kaspar continued with his prayers once risen to the throne, his newfound power doing nothing to dissuade his faith.   Under Kaspar, Atmora's religious temples and organizations were granted greater power in the region. For Kaspar believed that in returning the people's focus back to Torm, Atmora itself would be saved from ruin. This would work to somewhat unite Atmora's human population under the same mindset. Be it Torm or the populations new-found rallying cry, Atmora did begin a return to it's former economic glory by the mid-point of Kaspar's reign.   During this time, the city of Krysset would become dedicated to raising the glory of Torm, becoming Atmora's holy city. This was in part to the meteoric rise of The Inquisition under King Kaspar, a religious branch of Atmora's military. They'd be given almost free reign across the country, ensuring Torm's will was being followed in all faucets of Atmoran life.
Hemon Warmaw
King Hemon Warmaw is Atmora's current king, rising to the throne in AoR 600 after the death of Kaspar. The crowing of Hemon was seen as a good omen, for it took place on the 7th of Talyeh's Dawn, AoR 600. Hemon would become Atmora's leader into the new age, becoming known as "The Blessed" and "King of the New Moon".   Though not quite as religious as Kaspar, King Hemon still maintains a very close connection to Atmora's religious institutions, maintaining the authority of the The Uhara Sanctum and The Inquisition over the general public. During the plague of AoR 606, these two organizations were used as a police force across the lawless expanse of Atmora's wilder regions.   For in AoR 606, Atmora and the rest of Naneth fell victim to a mysterious plague. Aramoor and Atmora's other major cities became flooded with those seeking answers and healing. Atmora was again plunged into a short period of panic, famine and banditry. In response, Hemon turned the people's attention back towards religion while his agents worked to find the true cause. In AoR 607, the plague would suddenly end. King Hemon would proclaim that the people's dedication to Torm had inspired the god to save them once again.
