The Missing Miners.
In the shanty town of Plungehome, Edward stood watch atop the desolate lookout point gazing out over the encroaching forest. Until a cloaked figure came forth from behind him and requested his presence.
Varivera led Edward to the Smoldering Embers, a haven of flickering flames and relief. Within its walls, Edward was fed and instructed to wait. It was there that he crossed paths with Wrynna, a frail and clumsy elven girl seeking her purpose in Plungehome. For too long, Wrynna had been tossed between responsibilities, never finding her rightful place. Hindered by societal expectations and her delicate constitution, she yearned for acceptance and a chance to unleash her artistic talents.
Through providence or coincidence, destiny intertwined their fates as Wrynna joined Edward in the Smoldering Embers for the briefing. Varivera emerged once more, accompanied by Ash Sterling, the first founder and leader of Plungehome's mining operations. They disclosed the dire predicament—a group of miners had vanished after delving into a forbidden and sealed path. Edward and Wrynna were chosen for the perilous task of finding and rescuing them. Unspoken, but implied, was the notion that they were dispensable pawns in this dangerous request.
While Edward stayed behind to prepare, Wrynna journeyed to her family home to inform her parents of the dangerous quest that awaited her. Expecting reproach, she instead found solace and unwavering support. Her parents recognized the honor and dignity that would accompany her potential sacrifice. To bolster her resolve, her mother bestowed upon her an ancestral heirloom—a magical paintbrush with some arcane powers.
Upon their reunion, Edward and Wrynna embarked on their descent into the depths. Initially, they ventured down the leftmost mine shaft, only to become entangled in a labyrinthine network of tunnels. Realizing the peril of getting lost, they retraced their steps and discovered the sought-after entrance on the right. Their path led them to a rope dangling into the abyss, compelling them to descend further.
In the stygian depths, they stumbled upon a perfectly circular pit carved into the bedrock, exuding a suffocating humidity. After a brief exploration, they pressed on through a meticulously carved rectangular tunnel, its walls sticky to the touch. Opting to extinguish their torch, Wrynna guided them with her elven vision, navigating the inky darkness. A chasm loomed before them, where the sticky trail abruptly vanished. However, a stone bridge offered passage across. During their crossing, Edward's misstep nearly sent him hurtling into the abyss, but Wrynna's quick reflexes prevented a tragic demise.
Choosing caution over blindness, they rekindled their torch, risking discovery in favor of self-preservation. In the newfound illumination, they beheld the glimmering expanse of the ancient city beneath them—a sight both awe-inspiring and foreboding. Yet, their journey was far from over.
They pressed on, traversing stone-wrought corridors until they arrived at a hall dominated by a sacrificial altar. A miner's lifeless body lay upon it, a grim testament to the dangers that lurked in this forsaken place. To their right, a tunnel descended further, while in front of them stood a shattered cell, opening onto a labyrinthine catacomb system. Curiosity beckoned them into the catacombs, where an eerie presence watched their every move. The Guest as they would later come to know it, offered them a deal. Freedom in exchange for power. All which they had to do would be to retrieve the key which lay in the depths below.
Traversing further, they encountered Matthew Morgan, a traitor among the miners, who had orchestrated their disappearance. Morgan revealed his true allegiance to an ancient entity residing within the catacombs. Captivated by its promises of power and prosperity, Morgan had become a puppet of darkness.
A desperate battle ensued as Edward confronted Morgan while Wrynna dealt with the key's Guardian, a dreadful Dreamwing. Just as it seemed all hope was lost, Wrynna overcame the Dreamwing's challenges and returned to the fray, striking a decisive blow while Edward took the bulk of Morgan's attentions. Morgan's body crumbled to ashes, and they stood victorious able to retrieve the keys and rescue miners and fulfill the bargain alike.
Returning to the surface, they were hailed as heroes by the townsfolk, their names whispered with reverence. Yet, the darkness left an indelible mark on Edward and Wrynna. Their souls bore the weight of their sacrifice, and they found solace in each other's company. Plungehome's decline was stiffled albeit for how long no one knew. Edward and Wrynna, forever intertwined by their shared ordeal, rested and prepared themselves for now, they knew it would only be a matter of time before the people of Plungehome came calling again...
