Plungehome

Plungehome is a shanty town erected around a mineshaft built onto the mountainside. It was created in response to the The Tragedy at Cragmouth by Ash Sterling who, being part of the Sterling family owned the mines.   It is made out of narrow, winding streets lined with ramshackle huts, made from whatever materials the inhabitants could scavenge, ranging from wooden planks and scraps of cloth to rusty metal sheets and animal hides. The people here are refugees, worn down by hardship and desperation. They wander the streets in tattered clothes, their faces gaunt and haunted, their eyes darting nervously at any unfamiliar faces. Children play in the dirt, their laughter thin and brittle. Dogs and cats scavenge among the piles of garbage that litter the alleys.   The mine entrance lies behind the The Smoldering Embers. inconspicuously hidden behind a doorway which leads to the tunnels that delve deep into the rocky earth. At the end of each shift, a singular cart is brought up the mine shaft, where coal and once silver would be distributed amongst the people in the town, with a portion to keep them warm and another to trade with the Quiets. On occasion the grinding gears of the cart can be heard, but once it returns to the depths the sound, along with everything else, is swallowed by the darkness leaving only a disquieting silence in its wake.   Despite the poverty and squalor, there is a sense of community here, a shared bond forged by the struggle to survive in a harsh world. The inhabitants have banded together for protection, forming a loose hierarchy of leaders and enforcers. They share what little they have, and defend each other against outsiders who would prey on their vulnerability.   But there is also a sense of darkness that pervades the town, a shadow that hangs over everything like a curse. It is as though the mine, with its hidden depths and unknown horrors, has infected the people with a taint that can never be fully purged. They live on the edge of the abyss, always one step away from oblivion. There are rumors that the Sterlings were born in those mines, and that in time they return to the unknown depths for their final plunge.

Geography

The town is laid in against a mountainside. In addition to this the Silverstream runs through a small channel to the left of the main entrance. Its gentle flow adds to the few slivers of hope which linger in this place, allowing the community to survive and even thrive in some points. The stream winds its way into the forest, meandering through the thick undergrowth, where it quickly grows in depth and width.   The surrounding region is a slow descent into a forest where the trees loom tall and twisted, their gnarled branches reaching out like skeletal hands. The leaves rustle and whisper in the night breeze, and it is not uncommon to hear the distant sound of howling beasts.

Natural Resources

Coal from the mineshaft. There was a silver vein there once, but it seems long dried up.
