Phantom Ships

General Description

These boats are outfitted with magical technology, allowing them to become invisible in the moonlight. They are usually smaller vessels due to the limits of the enchantments involved in their production.

History & Development

Originally the phantom ships were designed during a period of war as a means of covert travel by sea. It became quite clear early on that the enchantment was unable to work effectively in daylight or on larger vessels (ships) and the keelboat become the vessel of choice for this endeavour. Despite the magic only working on small boats, the term ship was still used universally when referencing these specific vehicles.   Several of these boats were destroyed over the last century and it is thought that only a handful have survived. Many knowledgable operators of the technology perished in the wars and some of the methods of creating them were lost along with them.

Operation

The technology involved is difficult to create and especially tricky to maintain over long periods of time with operators usually having to spend numerous months dedicated to mastering the enchantments. On top of this, working knowledge of artificing is essential to keep this enchantment running for sustained periods and to fix any issues that may come up mid-voyage.

Current Use

Stories of these boats being used for smuggling have always been a part of stories and legends, however, recently over the last decade there have been several sightings of boats vanishing or reappearing around The Aardragoon Islands and the southeastern coast of Rayas.   Due to the secretive nature of the knowledge of what powers or organizations own these boats, it is not known where or how the Aardragoon factions obtained them.   A more recent development has seen these boats with additional enchantments, making them appear broken and discarded as so not to be designated a threat by an enemy or stolen.
