Isorok

A Hellspawn bonded who found greater purpose

I have no regrets, Master. You provided an escape from a place where I never felt I belonged and made me feel...like a person instead of a thing. I had a purpose with you instead of merely being spawned by the fragment of a mortal worth nothing. Open yourself up and accept all that I am. I give it freely and only ask that you live. Live, Master.
— Isorok to Tobias Phillips (Chant)
Isorok was an Impian with a considerable amount of Power, one of the rarer sort born from the fragment of a mortal soul. He spent almost three hundred cycles as purely a denizen of The Planes of Hell observing the Mortal Plane before he was summoned and bound to a young Mageborn by the name of Tobias Phillips. While many other Impians would be infuriated by such a fate, Isorok felt more at home amongst mortals than he did amongst his kind - perhaps because of his origin from a mortal soul.   He and Tobias were bound for only eight cycles before circumstances forced the Impian to choose between himself and his Master. Knowing the fate that had come to other Hellspawn-bound Mageborn, he made a different choice to try and keep his Master - and friend - from becoming tied to the Planes as he was.

Despite being small in size, Isorok was a sturdy but wiry little figure. His facial features were a strange mix between reptilian and mammalian, with a long snout of wickedly sharp teeth, a large nose, and deep-set slitted eyes. Once on the mortal plane, he chose to accent his appearance with piercings along his eye ridges and his pointed ears.   Isorok's other identifying features include swept-back curved horns, small wings, a tail, and reptilian feet. While his wings by all appearances should not have supported his weight in flight, the Hellspawn was not bound by the mortal laws of physics. He also had bright blue swirling tattoos that wrapped around his arms and legs as well as curled into the center of his chest. These markings were identified by the Hossum Thorn as representing the fragment of the mortal spirit he was spawned from, a last remnant of the memories and life that was still clinging to existence.   Upon being bound to Tobias Phillips, the chains of the binding appeared around Isorok's wrists and neck - physical manifestations of the bond that glimmered faintly with the runes from the summoning ritual.

Isorok's Past

Born of The Conflagrant Island in the Planes of Hell, Isorok was born of a sliver that broke off of Baen Arleth's spirit as he died. Left alone, the once former leader died with his army crushed and his home system in ruins, a member of the Covert Company killing him without him ever seeing their face. That sliver of a spirit slipped into the gaps between the planes of existence and came to rest beneath a tree on the Conflagrant Island, birthing into a new Impian. The name Isorok formed in its mind along with the knowledge of who it was spawned from.   Unlike others of his kind, Isorok never entirely felt at home on the Island or anywhere else amongst the Planes of Hell. He struggled with what he was and what he had been, never able to reconcile the connection between the two parts of himself.

It was not until the day that he was summoned to the Mortal Plane that Isorok found where he felt he belonged. Despite now being bound to a mortal, he felt...at home. It took some time before he trusted his bonded to open up about how he had been created, especially after learning that his new bonded's family had almost been entirely wiped out by Baen Arleth's forces during the Collapse and only one of them had escaped from the Glyni Ka'Roma System. Although the knowledge caused some strife between them, it eventually did bring them closer. Isorok's knowledge allowed them to right wrongs that still persisted and Tobias' acceptance of his past broke a cycle of anger against the Warlord that (although rightful) had plagued the family for nearly three hundred cycles.

Isorok's Sacrifice

The giving of power generated using Artbreeder
In 3540 AFT, Isorok and Tobias were forced to part ways. Although Tobias had proven himself useful to his community over the years, there were those in his past who sought to torment and torture the young man. Several of his boyhood tormentors managed to find him and hit him over the back of the head while he was working at his master's forge, tying him up and beating him to within an inch of his life. Despite the violence, both Tobias and Isorok held onto the hope that they would not be forced to use Magic to survive to avoid exposing themselves.   When his captors tossed his battered and broken body out into the toxic atmosphere of Arfa Obene, leaving him to suffocate in the noxious fumes and die, Isorok made a choice. He could allow Tobias to die and break the bond...or he could save his friend.
The ability to share Power is a common trait of the bond and eventually leads to Hellspawn and Mageborn conjoining unwillingly into one being. Isorok chose to force that conjunction, sacrificing his Power and lifeforce entirely of his free will to save his bonded. The Power of a Hellspawn freely given would not only have the capability to heal Tobias of all of his wounds, but it would allow him to survive almost anything else that the Mortal Plane might throw at him. During the bonding, the tormentors returned but they were not faced with the battered, near broken body they had left behind. Instead, they found the form of Tobias Phillips engulfed in otherworldly blue flames, his skin blue and body transforming before their eyes. In the middle of it he looked up at them, features shifting between human and reptile, his good eye entirely a reptilian gold and the bad eye that one of them had blinded long ago shining gold from the broken pupil.   They tried to run but Isorok had one final gift for his Master. Before his being was entirely absorbed, he lashed out and cursed the tormentors with blindness and nightmares for the rest of their lives - a mere fraction of what Tobias had suffered. With that final act, his consciousness disappeared as the manacles of their bond snapped shut around Tobias Phillips' wrists and neck.

Thanks! Mageborn can also have perfectly normal familiars (one character who I haven't expanded on has an owl) so I'm hoping to eventually expand on how that works as well. The Hellspawn bonds just came first because one of my main characters has one.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts,
with stoutest wrists and loudest boasts,
he thrusts his fists against the posts
and still insists he sees the ghosts.
