Kongamato

Early ancestors of dragonkind, kongamatos lacked the awesome power of their descendants, but showed early signs of the traits that dragons would become famous for. Their most notable feature is their beak, which, having slight magic, is supernaturally hard and durable, able to break through objects that it otherwise couldn't. This magical connection was likely developed over time into the breath weapons and other abilities of dragons. This adaptation is likely somewhat unlikely, as very few other animals have abilities of the same nature. A kongamato's wail is also powerful as a tool of intimidation.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kongamatos somewhat resemble pterosaurs, especially pterodactyls, having two legs, two wings, a long tale, and a beak. It may be that dragons are related to pterosaurs, and therefore dinosaurs, even if the dragons themselves balk at the idea. How true dragons acquired an extra pair of legs is unknown.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kongamatos lay a clutch of 2-6 eggs every 3-10 years, which hatch in roughly one month.

Ecology and Habitats

Kongamatos live in swamps or other watery areas. They prefer to dwell in still water and hunt in rivers and streams, where prey is regularly replenished.

Behaviour

Kongamatos exhibit a crude form of dragon greed and arrogance. They claim large territories, and defend them ferociously. They attack any rivals immediately, as well as killing large animals in their territory. They don't always fully eat these animals, as they kill them more to defend their territory than for food. The only time a kongamato won't attack another is while mating.

More intelligent than a mere beast, kongamotos can speak Draconic, but are not as clever as their true dragon descendants.
