The Pride of Aurius

Upon one fine day, Donar invited all the gods together for a feast. Though this was not uncommon, this particular feast had a special twist: Donar had created a Gold Dragon, named Aurius, and wished to show off his work.   (It is worth noting that other Dragons up to this point were primarily chromatic, with a few metallic dragons in their midst. However, no Gold Dragons had yet been created.)   Upon seeing such a magnificent creature, both Evelia and Cevena wished to claim it as a mount, so that they may traverse the skies atop such a brilliant and glorious creation. As they both approached Donar to ask for control over the dragon, they began to fight over who amongst the two of them was more worthy.   What began as a verbal encounter soon turned to a duel, with Evelia and Cevena both donning their finest armor and wielding their finest weapons. The rest of the gods, now delighted at the fresh entertainment, cheered each of them on.   But as the gods drank of fine wines, and ate of the finest foods in the lands, nobody noticed when the dragon, Aurius, changed his shape. He shifted into the same form as Rataxa, The Deceiver, and slipped from his collar. Rataxa, the only one to spot this, said nothing to the other gods, and only stopped his new doppelganger to correct him on his assumed eye color.   The duel between Evelia and Cevena lasted for an hour, and ended with each bloody, but with no clear victor. It was at this point that the gods realized that Aurius had escaped during the course of the melee. The two siblings, Evelia and Cevena, determined their duel as a draw, and vowed never again to raise arms against the other in anger. They proudly bear each others’ scars in their iconography.   It is for this reason that Gold Dragons possess such incredible pride, for each knows the story of how their forebear would have not even a god as a rider, and instead used his great cunning to slip away unnoticed.
