Laurgrailes's Asylum for the Emotionally Troubled (lar-GRAY-iyles; LAR-gray-uls)

The Padnamanor exhibit Empathic Tangibility which is a trait that manifests in two ways: they sense the emotions of others nearby them and they register these emotions (and their own) directly as pleasure or pain.   The general emotional trend of any society of significant size is toward a feeling of continual contentment. But outliers do exist and their thoughts may trouble others to the extent that they require isolation. Thus came the need for Asylums, the largest of which--Laurgrailes's Asylum for the Emotionally Troubled--is situated in the city of Caormorsie.

An Asylum of High Repute

To combat rising crime and emotional turmoil in the city's western and northern districts, the Caormorsie city council drafted plans for the creation of a new asylum. As asylums are viewed as necessary evils by the public of most cities, there was little public dissent to the plan. The site of the building was set on the city's outskirts upon a uninhabited bough of the enormous Cuardemeb tree the city is built on. It was named after the prominent architect Laurgrailes who designed it.   The facility was equipped with all the modern conveniences and boasted comfortable cells, or Tandambreurb, for its prisoners. It was also the first to offer a re-training program for moving isolated subjects to a clinic if they were deemed suitable, the precedent before being that the prisoners were haphazardly re-released into the public or exiled if no improvement was seen. At its construction, it had 200 Tandambreurb and a force of 400 employees, around 220 of which were guards. Since numerous renovations over the years, it has expanded to 290 Tandambreurb, 1000 employees, 300 of which are guards and 50 of which are specialists in rehabilitation and research.

A Prison of Isolation

The difference between an Asylum and a Clinic in Padnamanor societies is a significant one. Whereas a clinic serves as a place for recovery and healing from wounds (physical or mental), an asylum is purely for isolation of those who would otherwise harm others with their troubled thoughts.   The cells of an Asylum are called Tandambreurb or "thoughtless rooms" and achieve near-complete insulation from the outside by a material called Breurbcuor which is made from many layers of magically-imbued fabric. Some Asylums, including Laurgrailes, boast large Tandambreurb with all the comforts of a modern household. But isolation is key in this arrangement: no prisoner of an Asylum will ever see the face of a friend.
