Nuwa Seals the Sky

(...) So she made small figurines in her image that could walk, talk, and entertain her. Nuwa was happy, but tired of making each and every figurine by herself. She dipped a rope in the mud and shook it, and the droplets turned into people too.

This happy arrangement couldn't last forever. One day, the fire god fought the water god. They fought so hard that the earth shook and the sky shattered. Monstrous beasts rushed to attack as forests burned and rivers dried up. Nuwa was aghast at her creations' distress. (...)

Summary

Nuwa, a gorgon-like deity, descended to Earth. She felt bored and lonely even after making animals to fill the world, so she made a creature in her own image: Man.

Now that she was no longer bored, she taught mankind all she knew, and gave them free will to think for themselves.

One day, the fire god fought with the water god, causing the rivers to dry and the sky to fall from the rafters.

Nuwa rose to the sky and sealed it in place, draining her life to such a point that she would sleep forever.

Historical Basis

A volcanic explosion in Toba during the prehistoric age may have prompted this.

Spread

Very common knowledge among Asian citizens of the Tang Colonial States. It is one of the first nursery rhymes told to a child.

Variations & Mutation

Among the tailors, it is believed Nuwa used a spindle and thread to weave a patch for the sky, rather than sealing it with molten divine rock.

Cultural Reception

A self-sacrificing person will often be compared to Nuwa.
