Southsea Chinese

History

Southsea Chinese are members of the diaspora that scattered to all corners of the Earth. Their name comes from the southern region of China where most of them came from.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Generally, feminine virtues such as beauty and grace are popular.
Flowers and gems are another close second.
Anglicized Southsea Chinese will choose false names that still fit in the cultural norm.

Masculine names

Masculine virtues such as strength and bravery are popular.
Scholarly ones like "Bears-all-knowledge" and "Good-news" are as well.
Some men are named after plants, but this is far less common.
Anglicized Southsea Chinese will choose false names that still fit in the cultural norm.

Family names

The list is limited, being from the Hundred Family Names poem.
Most Chinese family names are far-removed from their former meaning of "place of origin."
One unusual name is Loong, the Dragon, as dragons are considered one of the holiest creatures in their mythology.

Other names

Even Chinese who aren't involved in the Anglicization movement will choose false names to make life easier for their friends.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When children are born, symbolic offerings are given to them to determine their predestinated path in life. Whatever the baby grabs is considered their first choice. These offerings range from books to calculators and painting supplies.

Common Myths and Legends

Unique to Southsea Chinese is the Sugarcane Savior, a mythological event where a village of southerners hid in a sugarcane grove from marauders on the 8th and 9th days of the new year.
As thanks for being spared, the survivors harvested the very grove they hid in as offering to the Heavenly Emperor.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Southsea Chinese love them some enormous noses and gold-orange skintones.
To balance out their love for giant noses, big eyes and small mouths are preferred in women.
Older folk generally dislike body modifications like ear piercing or tattooing.
Some of them go so far as to denounce makeup altogether, believing it to be a weakness of virtue.
Southsea youths generally tolerate makeup, even if some of them go as far as trying to make themselves look like Northsea Chinese instead.
