Born into a religious middle-class family near old Luoyang, Chen Hui was first brought up in Confucian and occult religious tradition before wanting to be a Buddhist monk like one of his elder brothers. Shortly after his father's death, he was sent to live with that brother and continued his schooling at a nearby monastery.

Due to political unrest, the brothers moved away to the southern regions, and continued schooling until Hui became an ordained monk at twenty years old.

He continued studying foreign languages in order to deepen his understanding of ancient texts. Five years after this in 627, he convinced himself that he had to go to India because it was the cradle of Buddhism, and set out on his long journey west. It took him seventeen years before he returned with proper original copies of the religious texts.
