The Kislyth Archives

Within the core of Kislyth lies a grand, domed structure known as The Kislyth Archives. The large domed structure serves as the city's biggest university, administration institution and as a judicial branch.

University

The Archives started out as a small school in the early days of Kislyth. As the city expanded, so did the university. A few decades ago, the archives served as one of the greatests and most respected universities in the known world, but as philosophy advanced into the current veiws on science , the university part of the Kislyth Archives stagnated into a organization which only collects information and not one which produces it. The university part now only consists of philosophers, students of law, and those who seek to apply what knowledge there is in benefit of society.

Archives

The Archives is a vast building which does not only tower most buildings in its vicinity, but also spans vast sections of the underground. The archives contains detailed information of anything one might imagine. Collectors strive to stock the shelves of the archive full of information which already exists in the world before it vanishes to the sands of time.

Archive hierarchy

The archive can be described in three categories. These categories are "Collectors", "Reviewers", and "Censors".   Collectors: Collectors are traveling academics who have a mastery in investigation, writing, and critical thinking. These individuals travel vast distances for many years at a time before returning to Kislyth with their collected info. This information is handed over to the reviewers, and after a period of time where the collector is questioned on what they have collected, where and from who, they will leave Kislyth again to seek out uncollected knowledge. Very few collectors returns from their first trip, and those who do become hardened survivors. It's not uncommon for seasoned collectors to become adventurers, or seek employ in dangerous work were their mastery of themselves become paramount.   Reviewers: The bias of a single collector can never be allowed to corrupt the information found in the archives. The reviewers is the most massive branch of the archives. Their tasks vary as stewards of the archives. Janitorial work, re-reviewing information in the archives, and preservative work. A select few of the reviewers are chosen to curate the collectors on their return. A handful of the most critical of reviewers are tasked in going over the collectors information, and then grill the collector over their findings. Be it descriptions of events, the collectors own thoughts on the matter, or random tavern stories; The collector is questioned equally seriously on the matter. Nothing is taken for granted, and everything is considered of critical importance. If the information the collector has brought is found satisfactory, it is passed on to become categorized and permanently stored into the archives.   Censors: On occasion, a collector will bring something in which is at odds with what the reviewers know, or common sense.  If the reviewers find unexplainable pieces of information, it is passed along to the Censors. The censors are a group of selected individuals with remarkable abilities to withstand the horrors of reality. They are tasked with studying the unknowable and heretical, and can therefore assess information on these subjects. The Censors holds a grand tome outlying what has been found to be information of great threat to either existence or to the city of Kislyth. Not everything dangerous should be written down however, and as such there are three censors which are the last stop information might go. These three people does not stand out from the other Censors in any other way, but have through oral tradition been informed of that which should not be known. These three are simply known as "The Oral Censors". The information they hold cannot be demanded by anyone by divine decree, even The Witan  are powerless to demand this information. The fate of any information handed to these three is handled in secrecy as to make it harder to infer what they do or do not know.

Judicial Duty

Due to the archives intricate documentation of changes in laws, and past legal conflicts, The Witan has delegated most of the judicial responsibility onto the Archives. Only inter-city problems and severe crimes are handled by the Witan. Small-scale conflicts are taken the the Kislyth Archives, and either deliberated in the case of a civil matter, or taken to court in the case of a criminal matter. In this regard, the Archives hold tremendous power as they have the last say in any case.
