War of Sea and Sky
50 years prior to Shadows Unleashed, a war between the kingdoms of Alba (tortles) and Karak (aarakocra) spread west as both armies tried to control the western front and seize resources. The local villages in the area that would become the Kingdom of Lothal were wiped out by the rampaging armies as settlements attempted to resist or were merely crushed under the wings and shells of the invaders. Word spread west and the other communities united, forming a unified army of powerful adventurers, a gold dragon, and forces armed with recently invented dwarven blackpowder that pushed the weakened aarakocra and tortles back east of the River Rexitrom. The final charge was led by a half-orc named Paul, who perished in the battle. He was revived shortly thereafter by Nergalee, the Guildmaster with a reincarnation spell, which resurrected him as a half-elf. To prevent any more invasions, the Kingdom of Lothal was founded with the newly christened Paul Shapechanger as king. While a formal army was organized to protect the new nation, the Adventurer's Guild was kept a separate organization to handle monster issues domestically.
Unknown to most of the country, this war was set in motion by the Morlocks. The great amount of death was used to fuel a ritual intended to break Mesogog's prison, but the makeshift army’s intervention resulted in an early ceasefire that weakened the ritual. As a result, Mesogog's cage was only shaken rather than broken. Mesogog's lieutenants then began seeking new ways to spread death and shatter his weakened shackles, while subsequently looking for methods to fulfill their original goal of creating an army of enhanced undead.
