The Steelwing Squadron

The Steelwing Squadron is 1 of the 2 that make up The Windrider Legion the other being The Silverwing Squadron. This squadron is very much the martial arm of the guild, they are heavy shock cavalry, with both mount and rider being mightily armed and armored. Their main tactic is to charge, in formation, the flanks or behind the enemy lines with great lances and withdraw to form up, then wheel about and attack once more. Other tactics include dropping grenades, alchemist's fire or holy water from on high, laying down lines of flammable oil from barrels held in their mounts talons and shooting arrows or quarrels from griffonback. They are the finest cavalry force in all the realm and only the most renowned cavaliers are given the opportunity to fly with the Steelwing Squadron. All members of the squadron ride war trained griffons from the aerie of the throne of stars. Occasionally the smaller races join the ranks, they usually ride 2 per mount, one flying and using a lance, the other dropping grenades or shooting a crossbow.
