Audeni Deneen
Born in 1935 to Zoe and Thomas Deneen, Audeni Deneen and her brother, Lucanus, were raised to be the leaders of Antarand. Mermish and descended from the First Islanders on her mother's side, not everyone on her father's side was entirely happy about his getting involved with the royal family. Like all royals, Audeni and her brother were raised speaking only Antaran Creole for the first five years of their lives, though the children were by no means isolated from other languages. At age five, they worked with private tutors to teach them other languages, along with traditional school subjects, and anything their parents felt was necessary to know for being the future leaders of Antarand.
Though Audeni didn't have traditional schooling, she did make friends, mostly through the First Islander community, which the royal family remains centered in. As part of this community, they pass on the Antaran language and teach their children about their heritage, as well as train them in water Magic. Despite having only a fraction of Mermish blood, water magic has always come easily to Audeni, as it does for most of the royal family.
As a young child, Audeni was helping in the kitchen and as she was taking a hot tray of cookies from the oven, the tray slipped, and she caught it with her wrist, burning it. She still bears the scar from this incident. As a teenager, Audeni got into further trouble, accompanied by several friends. Thinking it would be fun, they broke into an abandoned house near the river on the Eve of Krourin, when followers of the Mun faith believe the spirits of the dead are able to return to the world of the living. They spent the night there, attempting to call back dead spirits, to no avail, and left in the morning. The next night, Audeni agreed to meet her friend Suleiman there again, for a secret tryst. When Suleiman didn't show up, she assumed he had stood her up, and only learned the next day that he had disappeared altogether. Though Audeni and her friends never told anyone about breaking into the house, they all suspected this was somehow the cause of his disappearance. Audeni left the temple shortly thereafter, though this damaged her relationship with several family members.
Though Audeni has not returned to the Mun temple, she takes her role as Princess of Antarand very seriously. In the wake of their parents' deaths during the Southern Fever, she found an increasing need to support her brother in his position as Antaran King. Now an adult, she attends diplomatic meetings and acts as an advisor to Lucanus. Though she is not the actual ruler, she is foremost in the mind of the Antaran people, perhaps even more so than her brother. This means that she must be very careful about every decision she makes, from advising him, to picking out what to wear in the morning. Though she dislikes the burden, she's accepted it.
Because Audeni is so beloved, it came as a surprise in 1958, when a ten year old girl was caught attempting to steal a necklace she had been given by a Florarovan official. Audeni's brother has the girl imprisoned for a brief time, hoping to flush out her co-conspirators. When no one came forward, the girl, Ayan Tyeen, was released. Three years later, Audeni found Ayan once again in her bedchamber, attempting to steal the same necklace. This time, the fabric wizard had sewn an elaborate illusion to make herself appear to others as Audeni herself, not that this required much effort, as Ayan already rather resembled the princess. If it hadn't been for the royal ring, with magic preventing it from being stolen or copied, Audeni may have had difficult proving the thief was, in fact, a thief. But she didn't relish seeing the girl imprisoned again, especially with the obvious magical talents she displayed. Instead, Audeni convinced first her brother, then Ayan herself, to allow her to send the girl to Faraday School for Wizards. Audeni applied on the girl's behalf, and with Ayan's acceptance, became her patron. Though she is proud of her young pupil, she struggles with the media coverage of the story. While many in Antarand view it as a grand act of generosity, others believe Audeni to have other uses for Ayan. And regardless of what the country thinks, her brother still refuses to trust the girl.
