Fever Blindness

Fever Blindness is a condition in which patients being treated for The Southern Fever develop temporary or permanent blindness.

Fever Treatment

During the outbreak of the fever in the Southern Continent, doctors and healers alike raced to find a cure as people throughout the hemisphere fell ill and died from the new disease. Thus far, the only known treatment is Mechlobulin, which frequently causes blindness.

Though Mechlobulin attacks the virus which causes the fever, it also affects the retina, usually resulting in almost total blindness. Most patients report that they can still see light, and some say that they can clearly see objects within a few inches of their face. Sometimes, a patient's sight returns partially, or in rarer cases, completely, but most often, the condition is permanent. Though the drug affects physical sight, it seems to have little to no affect on magical sight. Patients with the ability to see magic within objects and people generally report no change in this ability, even if they have lost all other vision. This has greatly interested magic researchers, as it indicates the ability to see magic is a different process than other vision.   As the liklihood of blindness increases with the amount of the drug a patient has taken, doctors try to be conservative with the treatment. But as it is the only known treatment for the fever, which is often lethal, the best way to prevent the condition to to prevent the spread of the fever through the use of quarantine measures. Researchers continue to work on developing a new treatment, and Cyril Han believes he may have found an answer in the Dream Sweet plant, which has natural antiviral properties.
