The Rings of Auras
The Original Binding Magic
The village leader is now sixty, and has lived here all his life, but even he has no idea what need anyone would have for binding a pond.
Auras
Auras is a small town that holds no more than 1,000. It is about a day's drive from the northern coast of Diamondheart, down a country road with little else on it. Because the town is rather out of the way, some people believe it was originally built by dragons, though the buildings mostly look like they were built for humans. Different groups have moved in and out of the area over the centuries, from religious groups to extended families. It is currently a tourist town.
The Rings
The outermost ring marks the edge of the town. It is a variation on a level 2 training pattern. Each circle going inward is a stronger binding pattern than the last, and anthropologists have hypothesized that different types of buildings were built in each ring. The first three rings contained farms and schools, the fourth and fifth, personal houses, the sixth and seventh, businesses, and the eighth, the temple. The ninth circle fits perfectly around Auras Pond, at the center of the town. Magicologists are unsure if the circle has expanded and shrunk with the pond or if it has bound the pond to its current size.
The rings of Auras have led to some advancements in binding magic, though many mysteries remain. By the time the rings were studied regularly, many of the binding patterns were known, though the sixth ring led to the creation of the current level 3 binding pattern. The second and ninth rings, however, use unfamiliar patterns that have yet to be effectively replicated. Furthermore, no one seems to be able to consistently turn the wards on and off.
The rings themselves appear to made out of a type of wire. Samples of the wire have been taken from the first, fourth, seventh, and eighth rings, all of which were previously broken. Studies show them to be made of the same metal, but it is an unfamiliar metal of which nothing else known on Nideon has been made (though some have posited the binoculars of Virginia Blake were made of the same.)
