Eastern Pýli
Pýli was once a single city. Once the regional capital of the Southern Atkorian Empire (Later the Capital of the Southern Imperium), Pýli was an arcane wonder to behold. Split in two, the city was separated by a massive artificial canal miles across that flowed into the inland Thalan Sea. This split was bridged by the so called "Asteia Bridge," an arcane bridge that allowed creatures and items up to the size of a dragon to bridge the gap instantly.
After the fall of the Southern Imperium the Asteia Bridge was destroyed and the city split, creating the foundations of the modern Western Pýli and Eastern Pýli.
Eastern Pýli was all-but destroyed by Western Pýli shortly before the unification of the region by Joaniala into The Realm, leaving much of its port and defenses in shambles.
The Realm gave Eastern Pýli the new task of being the primary headquarters of the inland army portion of the Bunusach Trodai, The Realm's military. The location of the city allows the land army to respond to major threats in the east in a mostly timely manner, while its proximity to the main portion of The Realm's navy in Western Pýli means it can quickly deploy into The Heartlands if needed.
The city is also home to the Stoicheíokanóni (usually shortened to its translation, Elemental Cannon). This massive arcane weapon is capable of firing nearly 100 miles in any direction and unleashing an elemental firestorm upon its target. The weapon was disabled after the fall of the Atkorian Empire, and the Carlegnian's never trusted the locals enough to reactivate it, but the mages of the Staidear felt differently and turned it back on, making the region that much easier to defend.
Government
Unlike most locations in the Heartlands of The Realm, Eastern Pýli is not ruled by the Stuthoir of the Bealai (the state religion). Instead the region is under the control of the Councilor of Earth of the Domhanda Council, and as a result is effectively under control of the Bunusach Trodai, who the Councilor of Earth is responsible for representing and overseeing.
Defences
With the majority of the well-trained Bunusach Trodai army based in and around the city Eastern Pýli is effectively the best-garrisoned city in Efaanu. This is pretty helpful as the cities walls were reduced to rubble when the city was destroyed by its western neighbor centuries back.
Industry & Trade
The city is rife with traders, blacksmiths, and other army-supporting industry. While it's Western neighbor is the superior trading port in almost every way trade does flow into Eastern Pýli, especially trade destined for the eastern parts of The Realm from traders and merchants who don't want to risk sailing around the Southern Tip of the continent.
History
Western Pýli was once conjoined with Eastern Pýli via the magical Asteia Bridge that allowed both cargo and living things to travel between the two instantly. After the fall of the Southern Imperium the two cities were disconnected after the Asteia Bridge was destroyed.
In the following interregnum the cities became rivals for the fish in the canal and the ocean around their territory, and naval wars followed.
The wars came to an end when the Carlegnian Empire conquered the region and forced the two cities to coexist. Despite this there was still rivalry and fishermen would often attack each other for stealing from the other. Once the Carlegnian Empire fell the two cities went back to open warfare with each other. Though the wars died down once Western Pýli managed to land its army in Eastern Pýli and sack and raze most of the city.
When Joaniala began her unification of The Realm Western Pýli was one of her first stops. She quickly managed to bring Western Pýli to heel and with even less effort took the all-but destroyed Eastern Pýli.
Joaniala set the two cities to hold the headquarters for The Realm's navy and army as to give them a greater purpose than fishing. While the change in industry was resisted at first the increase in jobs and prosperity quickly began to silence naysayers. Further, the spreading faith in the Bealai soon gave the cities a common ground. While the rivalry is still paid some lip service, by and large the cities peacefully coexist.
Architecture
With Eastern Pýli razed relatively recently the city has had to been rebuilt from the ground up. Wooden and loose stone buildings are much more common in Eastern Pýli than in Western Pýli. This isn't aided by the armies presence, who tends to use more tents and rough construction than structured stone in its construction and housing efforts.
Geography
Eastern Pýli is one of the last steps into the heartland from the east. With the Thalan Sea to its immediate north, the sea to its south, and the canal to its west, the only main approach is to its east. Eastern Pýli is that much further south than its western neighbor, meaning that it suffers from colder winters and isn't far from the southern tundras of Efaanu.
Natural Resources
Eastern Pýli enjoys fishing, which Western Pýli all but abandoned after being turned into a major military port.
