Scaro Gems
Fine, fine gems in these rings you have what are they? Gems from Scaro? That is rare these days!
Down in the open pit mine of Scaro there was hope to find a new source of salt closer to home than the mountains further north, instead, they struck into a more valued commodity. Gems of shifting reds, greens and whites were found in the ground and became a big export as the gems became cut into fine jewellery or decorations. Due to the abundance of gems found the price was more reasonable than ordinary diamonds, rubies and emeralds. Some even considered the gems to be more beautiful since you could cut them to get shifting colours.
Today the Scaro gems are considered much rarer due to the abandonment of Scaro and its mine. Since no new source has been found, it is believed to be the only source in existence.
Properties
Material Characteristics
The Scaro gems uncut look like a solid, milky-transparent rock that has specks of colour running through it. When put up towards a light source, the light shines into rays of the same colours. Many colours are found in the same Scaro gem and sometimes they even mix. They only exist in deep(wine) and light(pinks) reds, deep(emerald) and light(mint) green and lastly in a "deep white" similar to a foggy diamond.
When they are finally cut into gems, depending on the skill and choice of the gem cutter, the results are similar to many other. A clear, close-to-transparent gem is produced that seems to shine on its own when hit by light from all different angles. Even the light-coloured ones shine in the light. While the traditional cuts usually try to avoid mixing the colours, there are equally as many gem cutters that try to create mixes inside for a great effect on the viewer.
Distribution
Trade & Market
The Scaro gems are a luxury item among other gems but have been more affordable compared to others due to the abundance of what was found in Scaro. With new digs coming up with tens of kilograms each day it seems like they would be even cheaper had it not been for that cutting the rock into gems wasted much of the rocks. Uncut rock was also fine to many as a decorative item, going for as low as 10 gold coins. Merchants from Nekuram's capital would travel to acquire and sell the wares on behalf of nobility and the wealthy alike.
In the present time, however, no one digs for new gems after the plague forced people to abandon the town in the early days of it running through the province of Galduri. This has made the gems much more of a luxury gem than even some other gemstones.
